The gambles that turned George’s Yankees into Hal’s Yankees | New York Post

Good stuff from Joel Sherman.

Steinbrenner has had what he calls a “recurring dream” for years that the Yankees could honor his twin mandates — “be under $200 million [in payroll] and be a championship-caliber team.” His goal was to do this in 2014, but he felt the club didn’t have a puncher’s chance to contend without an ace, so he approved the signing of Masahiro Tanaka.

If things work out, with Judge & Stanton really doing the Mantle & Maris thing on the way to an AL East title, attendance is likely to set a record for the new Yankee Stadium, with corresponding TV ratings. Hal will do very well, indeed.

I far prefer Hal to George. Most of the irrationality (Steve Trout, Dave Collins, Ed Whitson, every random fading slugger available for a prospect, etc., etc., has gone away.

Billy Martin, Gene Michael, Billy Martin, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Bob Lemon, Billy Martin, Lou Piniella, Billy Martin, Miller Huggins, Billy Martin...
