The Giants have played the most extra-inning games of any team this year

Where’s the Croix de Candlestick when we need it the most?

If this season feels a lot more tedious than last season, despite the team actually faring better in terms of wins, one of the reasons why may be because it has been very, very long. Not just in the sense of it being mid-August of a losing season, but in terms of actual length of games.

As of Thursday morning, the Giants have the most extra-inning games of any team in baseball this year with 17 games that included free baseball. If there were even such a thing. The next closest team is the Oakland A’s who have 16 and the next closest in the National League are the Mets, to the surprise of no one, with 15.

The surprising news is that the Giants are not actually .500 in these games (or as close as you can get with an odd number)! They are 10-7, which is good! Comparatively, the A’s are 11-5 and the Mets are 6-9.

It doesn't surprise me since I'd guess there is no correlation between team performance and amount of extra innings games.

From B-R via Wikipedia:

Most extra inning games in a season since 1908:

1943 Red Sox 31 games (15-14-2)

Since 1969:

1990 Astros 27 games (14-13)

Fewest extra inning games in a season since 1908:

1936 Browns 3 games (1-2)

Since 1969:

2016 Angels 4 games (0-4)

The Giants tied with the Blue Jays for the most extra-inning games last year and went 12-7. They were tied for second most in 2016 and went 11-7. So the tediousness of this season must be because of something else.

I'm not really sure how a "stat" of 17 games for the team with the most, vs 7 for the team with the fewest is really something of note at all. The only piece of note that concerns extra innings this year, is the Mariners with a .923 winning percentage.

You can get this info from the standings page, but for the most part, this is the info that matters when it comes to extra inning play this year in mlb.

When your pitching staff allows 1064 runs in a season, extra-inning games are not going to be a common occurrence.

Rangers 7, Giants 6 in ten last night, so move SFG to 10-8 and TEX to 7-6.

It felt to me like the Cubs have played a ton of extra inning games this year and it looks like they have. 14 as of last night.

Teams with good pitching and poor offense would seem to be somewhat more likely to play extra-inning games. It's more common for a pitcher's duel to end up tied than a slugfest.

8 - Is this true? A quick look at BBRefPI;

Runs>15 extra inning games since 2000; 27.1 games/year

Runs< 7 extra inning games since 2000; 98.4 games/year

Heh, I really figured this was going to be a big ol’ no but you’re right.

I'm surprised you doubted me. It's logical that teams are more likely to finish with the same number of runs in a low-scoring game. There's a reason so many soccer games end in ties.

Yeah, but it’s just one of those “it makes sense so it must right” things where I assumed the reality was different.
