The Juan Vené HOF ballot

Don’t know what’s funnier…Juan Vené‘s HOF ballot babelfished or Juan Vené‘s HOF ballot! (Maddux, Glavine, Morris, Smith)

This is the month of the year when I not only get more calls from my colleagues in the Major League Baseball Writers Association, but also more times I call them. Comment, we consulted, we discuss about how voting for the Cooperstown Hall of Fame.

Some ask me this time why not vote for Mike Mussina. Do not think that it deserves my vote, and less in their first year… * hint at others to ask if I think that they should never be elavados Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro and Sammy Sosa. My answer is that I’m not voting for them, for liars

As I already posted it, vote this time by Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Jack (Jack) Morris and Lee Smith. To see how most answers me!...

The good news: his "names per ballot" doubled, from 2 to 4! Take that, logjam!

I don't really know why it can't translate 'el gato' since even I can do that, and I don't speak Spanish.

Maybe the Babelfish was bewildered by the sheer craziness of the ballot and suffered a glitch.

Google Translate does a slightly better job.

Jack (The Jack) Morris is so awesome.

It would appear Juan is a holdover Morris voter.

Yup, I remember Jacj (The Jack) from last year.

Well, if each voter who had 5 or fewer votes last year doubles it this year then someone will get in (Maddux/Glavine most likely). That is the bright side. A shame so many people have ballots who honestly seem to think Morris was better than Mussina and Schilling when he really is more in the Kenny Rogers category. Lee Smith...there was a case when he had held the save record for a decade (13 years he had it) but that record has been blown out of the water by two guys now with John Franco's 424 and Billy Wagner's 422 also being up there and Franco didn't pass the first ballot while Wagner will most likely be a one and done too while his successor in save leadership, Trevor Hoffman, faces a very high uphill battle to get in.

Ah well. Could be worse, at least this time he has 2 guys who deserve to be in on his ballot.

How the #### does this ####### only vote for 4 people? What the #### is wrong with him? Take his children away.

The excerpt is auto-translated from Spanish... then i guess I shall withdraw my insults about his writing. His voting is still awful though.

This is the worst ballot I've seen this offseason. Four votes, one of which is for Lee Smith, another of which is for Morris? If ever there were grounds for revoking someone's voting privilege, this is it.

I think it can be explained (though obviously it's idiotic) because, first, if you're not voting for anyone with the slightest whiff of a steroids taint -- which for him seems to include any hitter of the 90s/00s, then your ballot isn't so crowded after all. Secondly, he seems not to appreciate pitchers like Mussina, or has a very very very high standard for pitchers, which somehow Morris and Smith meet. He's not too bright, has a chip on his shoulder about steroids, seems to have a very small Hall, and is only voting for pitchers with Wins or Saves and they have to be pitchers who Knew How To Win.

That is about the best "explanation" I can come up with, though not a justification.

I anticipate that Paul Daugherty's ballot will be the worst again. In all honesty, I think his ballot from last year was worse than Murray Chass' ballot: Jack Morris (same as Chass), Craig Biggio (ok, better), Fred McGriff (not too bad), and Pete Rose (oh God, make it stop).

Frank Thomas.

There is no reason at all exclude this guy.

Let's say you are against whom many people perceive as the obvious steroid guys, that eliminates Bonds, Clemens, Raffy, Big Mac.
Let's say you are not voting for anyone with a slight whiff of taint, that eliminates Piazza, Bagwell.
Let's say you are one of those "well if you have to argue his case, he ain't a HOFer" guys, that eliminates Raines, Mussina, Schilling, Edgar and pretty much the rest.

But Frank Thomas, c'mon. He, rightly or wrongly, does not have the steroid taint and is an absolute no-doubter where the stats are concerned, both old school and current metrics.

Cleaned up for language..

It almost pisses me off more that he included Glavine and Maddux. Why them and not Frank Thomas or Jeff Bagwell or Kurt Schilling? Just 'cause

I once got to see Frank Thomas hit a home run in person. He was DH'ing for the A's. My brothers and I were sitting in good, cheap seats down the 1B line in the Sky Dome in Toronto.

Whether he makes the Hall this week or has to wait for a couple of years, I'll always feel blessed to have seen that.

I believe 2/10 is a letter grade of "F", but I'd be willing to entertain the idea this ballot actually deserves an "F-"
   21. Ron J2 Posted: December 09, 2013 at 01:07 PM (#4614248)
#16 But he spent substantial time at DH and there seem to be some voters for whom that's a disqualification.

Here is a less silly translation:

This is the time of year when, not only do I get more calls from my colleagues in the Major League Baseball Writers Association, but also they receive more calls from me. We hold comment, consultation, and discussion about how we are voting for the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

Some ask me: why not vote for Mike Mussina this time? I don't believe he deserves my vote, much less in his first year… Others hint at the question of whether I should honor Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro and Sammy Sosa. My response is that I will not vote for them...for liars.

As has already been posted, I voted this time for Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Jack (El Gato) Morris and Lee Smith. Let's see how the majority responds!

The ONLY interesting thing about this is the "El Gato" thing. I had never heard this nickname for Jack Morris, but apparently it's a Spanish thing to call him this. In Spanish it either refers to a cat or the kind of jack used to lift a car. I think it's cool that a moustached white guy has his own nickname in the Latin world. I get the sense there is some sort of Chuck Norris phenomenon with Jack Morris, some sort of Platonic apotheosis of white guy machismo. Their names are even similar. I wonder if Tom Selleck is big in Mexico.
