Obligatory mawkish where-you-were post?

Can we move on to the Giants game now?

HOW WILL THE CUBS LOSE SOLE POSSESSION OF FIRST PLACE TODAY?

Braves seem to be pulling away from the Phils but there are two other great pennant races shaping up here in the National League.

The two teams play each other 7 of the last 10 games of the season. It's not over yet.

Braves are the presumptive NL East champs. There, I said it. I'm sure Sam will be doing his Superior Dance as he goes wee-wee all over my grave. I mean, if the Phillies can't beat the Marlins nor the Mets, then...they're no better than the Nats who pulled off the same sleight of hand.

The Phils are under .500 if you get Pythaggy about it. They are not a good team. The Barves have no worries.

Walks beat me to it.

I'm fully prepared for the possibility that the Cubs play one game in October.

I sure as #### am not.

Right now is as close as Milwaukee gets to the Cubs, I say. Cubs win tonight, and continue to slowly put more distance between them. The Cubs and Brewers have been doing this get close and then further apart for a while now.

As mediocre as the Cardinals have been the last couple weeks (6-6 last 12 games), they're actually very close to having an eight-game winning streak: their last three losses have all been walk-offs, and the loss before that came in extra innings.

In a slightly alternate universe they'd have a half-game lead over the Cubs, instead of their current 3.5-game deficit.

Of course, during their August hot streak, they were in fact winning all those close games, and the recent past is probably a more realistic reflection of their true talent (that bullpen!).

Bryce Harper is now having essentially an average Bryce Harper season.

2018 (inc. 2 BB so far today):
.391 OBP/.508 SLG

Career to date, 2012-2018:
.387 OBP/.514 SLG

Gonna miss him next year :-(

FIP star Nick Pivetta gives an opposite field hr to a Kieboom for his first HR in his career then gives up the first ML hit to hurler Fedde . And then he’s gone.
I can’t believe he’s going to be anything more than a #5.

Manfred is going to end up being considered the worst commissioner in MLB history if he doesn't do a complete 180 from his pathetic fecklessness thus far and institute some meaningful changes. And after he blew his best (only?) chance to do anything without the union's consent, it ain't gonna happen.

Kapler bringing in his 5th pitcher to start the sixth. Five pitchers for five batters. Presumably, Hector Neris will get an inning, barring disaster.

I think the math is starting to favor the Bravos in a big way. If the Phils fall back another game or two math will be the only thing keeping them alive.

Juan Soto just absolutely robbed Maikel Franco by leaping as high as an elephant's eye and bending his arm Fantastic Four style to catch a ball right out of the glove of a young fan along the LF foul line. He came down so non-chalantly that I thought he didn't catch it, but he did. He could use some more chalance in such cases.

That's all well and good, but if he didn't give the ball to the kid afterward, the play is ruined.

Then again, by "young fan," you could quite possibly have meant someone older than Soto himself.

With a 2nd-inning RBI double, Nationals Terrific Teenager Juan Soto moves up to a tie for 6th on the MLB Age-19 Doubles Leaderboard, passing Buddy Lewis, Tony Conigliaro & Cesar Cedeno, while tying George Davis (22). Soto's RBI also ties Sherry Magee (57) for 8th in that category. Keep in mind that Soto wasn't called up until May 15, after only 35 PA aboves Class A ball. Even more impressive, Soto continues to lead the all-time MLB age-19 list in both OPS (.928) & OPS+ (141, before today's games).

Juan Soto's 2-run HR moves him past Ken Griffey, Jr. (16) into 4th place for HRs on that Age-19 Leaderboard linked in # 38, one behind Mel Ott(18). The 2 RBI tie him with teammate Bryce Harper (59) for 7th in that category.

cards up 2-0 early after ozuna hits a rocket double with men on ...

if this keeps up i am willing to consider the idea that the tough losses of the last week or so were the result of the random distribution of luck in close games, and not true regression.

I don't know how you would measure this, but I'm pretty confident the Cardinals have probably been in the most games in the season that they had a "real" chance to win as late as the 7th or even 8th inning, as any team in baseball. The number of blow outs that the Cardinals have experienced this year is very low (and at least two of them were blow outs that turned close or tie games into blow outs in the 7th inning or later)

This Cardinal team, whether it was Shildt or Matheny, was in pretty much every game this season....

edit: Except maybe the Red Sox......

He got out of control and did a 360 into the camera well. He did leave the game on his feet. Looks like concussion protocol time.

If the catcher and infielders meet at the mound for a while, and then a pinch-hitter is announced, and then the pitching coach comes out to join them, that should absolutely count as two mound visits. Well, it shouldn't be allowed in the first place, but if it is, it should count as two.
