Wilson looked very good there. Q had a great outing overall.

Don't fret, Wilson is good, remember? :D

Right, I wanted him in the 8th for the whole inning.

Did someone post the link to the Statcast Sprint Speed page?

Yes, yes I did ...

With Carl Edwards slowly transitioning into Carlos Marmol, I do wonder what sort of late-inning configuration changes Joe will make, if any. Chavez has looked pretty good, no?
   106. Meatwad Posted: September 11, 2018 at 10:21 PM (#5742640)
Moses, I will need to see some replays but it seemed slow developing to me because of the runner and how slow it was moving. I could be wrong.

Slowly?

For the record, I'll rank my confidence in various Cubs players producing a positive outcome

Hamels
Zobrist in a clutch spot
Hendricks
Javy on the bases or in the field
The offense in general

Gap

Quintana
Strop, cishek, Wilson
Chavez

EDIT: Bote at walk off time

It was, and they still almost got him. Murphy is significantly slower than javy at literally everything.

God help me but I'm much more confident with Caratini hitting than willson right now.

....

José Quintana last 5 starts:
1.84 ERA, 29.1 IP, 21 Hits, 10 BB, 25 K, 0 HR, 1.057 WHIP

10 career starts vs Brewers
1.60 ERA, 67.1 IP, 40 Hits, 15 BB, 63 K, 5 HR, 0.817 WHIP

That wasn't reflected in your schematic above. May need to revise.

They're both in the gooey middle. That gooey middle is volatile and constantly changing. Like goo.
   114. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 11, 2018 at 10:34 PM (#5742653)
I find Ian Happ's offensive game aesthetically unappealing.
   115. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: September 11, 2018 at 10:36 PM (#5742654)
Does Happ lead the league in both swinging and looking k rate?
   116. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: September 11, 2018 at 10:37 PM (#5742656)
You want to talk about crazy, but if heyward is fully healthy for the playoffs I'd think long and hard about keeping Gore over Happ on a playoff roster.

Sure, why not? Gore would get about as many at-bats as Joe gave Happ in the playoffs last year (i.e. zero), and at least he could pinch run.
   123. Meatwad Posted: September 11, 2018 at 10:46 PM (#5742664)
At least gore uses his arms when he runs.

I don't think it's crazy at all. Guy is basically a free base, and that #### can be gold in October.

Dear Commissioner Manfred...
   127. Kiko Sakata Posted: September 11, 2018 at 10:52 PM (#5742668)
Craig Counsell is doing my absolutely least favorite thing about baseball: three pitchers to face three batters to get three outs in an inning. Hopefully Rizzo will go deep just so it blows up in his face. Of course, then we'd have to see a fourth pitcher this inning!
   128. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 11, 2018 at 10:53 PM (#5742669)
...please eliminate two.

P.S. I am not a crackpot.

(P.P.S. Thanks, Kiko!)
   129. Kiko Sakata Posted: September 11, 2018 at 10:53 PM (#5742672)
And he didn't even go to a lefty to face Rizzo. What the ####!? You couldn't have brought in Guerra a batter earlier to face Bryant?

I consider myself more of a walk-on, actually.

Do you want to watch this version of Happ hit in the playoffs?

Amazing.

Plus both reviews tonight were the fastest I've ever seen.
   136. Kiko Sakata Posted: September 11, 2018 at 11:00 PM (#5742682)
I was thinking of chiming in on the Happ/Gore conversation that alternately the Cubs could keep Russell off the postseason roster. But he is a really nice late-inning defensive replacement!
   137. cardsfanboy Posted: September 11, 2018 at 11:00 PM (#5742683)
jeezus... the Cardinal announcers instead of giving credit at all to Matheny said the following "Mozeliak as gm has never had a losing season in a decade."...

you kinda missed the fact that the manager was Matheny for a good portion of that.
   138. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 11, 2018 at 11:01 PM (#5742684)
Russelling was Javying before Javying went mainstream.
   139. cardsfanboy Posted: September 11, 2018 at 11:01 PM (#5742685)
Tyler O'Neill with his 8th homerun of the season, to make it 9-1 Cardinals....
   140. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 11, 2018 at 11:01 PM (#5742686)
Well, that's getting it done in a big way in a big spot.

So, flipping over to Cards/Pirates on MLB, I find out that the Cardinals have a reliever who I assume is the second porn star (after Kaz Tadano) to pitch in the majors: Dakota Hudson.

I mean, Juan Soto has hit 16 home runs including 1 tonight.

I went back and looked, that last review took exactly 15 seconds from the time the headphones went on until the ump signaled out.

Which is all well and good, but that's one of those As*hole Challenges that should never happen in the first place.

Tyler O'Neill has 120 pa, compared to Soto's 347.....

edit: Note I wasn't advertising for O'Neil in the slightest, it was literally just a mention of what he has done this year....

It's not my fault that Soto's better.

Oh, did I say 16 home runs?? I meant 17 home runs. 7-6 Nats in the top of the 10th in Philthydelphia.
   150. cardsfanboy Posted: September 11, 2018 at 11:16 PM (#5742696)

Soto is still inferior to Bader on a per game basis.... but he'll still beat Bader for second place in rookie of the year.
   151. The Yankee Clapper Posted: September 11, 2018 at 11:16 PM (#5742697)
Juan Soto has homered again to give the Nationals a 7-6 lead in the 10th. He's 19, with only 35 AB above A ball before being called up. Best to pay attention.

Which is all well and good, but that's one of those As*hole Challenges that should never happen in the first place.

From a pure time standpoint, though, this is also a play that, in pre-replay days might well have prompted a lengthy brouhaha between Counsell and/or Braun and the first-base umpire. Now, having grown up as a fan of Earl Weaver's Orioles, I love me a good brouhaha, which is a hell of a lot more entertaining than watching umpires huddled up wearing headphones. But, from a pace-of-play perspective, a brisk replay is probably better than the alternative.

Yeah, fair point - I guess "He was clearly out, just accept it" is probably too much to ask.

You could look it up.

Is a position player pitching yet?? Because that would be about as 2018 Baseball as you can get.

Heh. I wonder if you send the pitching coach out to visit a position player on the mound, or some other coach.

And a double makes it 11-5, which of course necessitates a pitching change for the final out. To a reliever with a huge beard, natch, who throws his 8 additional warmup pitches, then one actual pitch to end the game.

Thomas Boswell @ThomasBoswellWP
For 1 yr at 19, Juan Soto (.950 OPS) is Mel Ott (previous teen high at .921).
After starting DH w/two outs, Soto has
single,
line single to RF,
RBI double off Arrieta in RF corner,
415' 2-run HR off Jake to CF,
W (scored),
an out &
game-winning opp-field HR in 10th on 99 mph!

Deivi Martinez on Soto: “He’s 19, but he plays like he’s been in this league a long time.”

On a day with so many just plain weird baseball occurrences, Gorkys Park Hernandez hits a broken-bat grounder to SS which would've been fielded cleanly by Dansby Swanson (the AGGRESSIVE attorneys) except that the broken barrel of the bat slammed into his glove just as the ball was entering the pocket, so the ball bounced away. I seriously doubt you will ever see that again.
