Made even worse by the late Omnichatter posting. Tough day.

HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?

Also, White Sox broadcast crew, or Yankees broadcast crew? Maybe I'll just go on a killing spree or something.

Blue Jay offense with TWO runs in one inning! The majority of this season so far, they only get one or two an entire game.

YES broadcast showing clips from Aaron Judge's batting practice - he's hitting some shots above the restaurant/batter's eye in centerfield. Impressive, but it's only counts during the game.

By happenstance, I heard that Hank Azaria will be interviewed by the Mets radio booth in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Howie Rose made special mention of Brockmire so this one might be worth it.

Thanks, Bote. I love the new show. Crude and hilarious.

Jace Peterson patrolling LF for the Braves? They say because Phillips is their regular 2Bman so that makes sense. He made a pretty nice catch against the stands to retire Eaton.

Does Jose Reyes have to swing at every first pitch? Zac Efron was walking the ballpark.

Thanks, Bote. I love the new show. Crude and hilarious.

I caught the premiere episode on YouTube, but I cut the cord a few years back. How to watch it online (legitimately)?

I also stumbled across what could be described as teasers from about 2011 featuring Joe Buck and other notables describing Brockmire on par with Vin Scully, et al. So this idea had been germinating for some time before getting the green light.

Hank Azaria on Mets radio right now and he's even doing play-by-play for the game in front of him in between answering questions.

Bruce Bochy had minor heart surgery earlier today. :(

Will miss the KC series, but expected to be back in the dugout on Friday.

EDIT: I'm going to assume that his cardiologist was unaware that the weekend series is in Colorado.

Honestly, this Johnson character has nothing. The Jays really should have a handful by now.

I'm pretty sure Brockmire's voice is patterned after Curt Gowdy who has that slight nasal timbre combined with a bit of southern twang. I'll consult YouTube to confirm after the games.

Life is too short to watch a Braves game.

I am spoiled by the other pitchers on the staff but I just don't like the fact that Wheeler does not throw strikes enough.

So, who had 2 outs, top of the first for the first trainer visit to Anderson? Staying in the game though after a liner off the lower leg.

EDIT: Staying in to give up another double. 3-0 Brewers.

I don't know who Curt Gowdy is, but Azaria has claimed that the character is patterned after a Mets announcer from the 70's. But that the voice is just designed to be typical of all the announcers from that time period.
   24. cardsfanboy Posted: April 18, 2017 at 08:27 PM (#5437716)
From an article I just found.
One of the main things was [broadcaster voice] this voice. I call it the generic baseball announcer voice. It seemed to be the voice of every sports broadcast that I heard. I got a little fascinated. I started wondering, “Did these guys always sound like this. Do they sound like this at home? Do they sound like this in emotional situations, in intimate situations?” Then that idea sort of stuck in my head. It’s a voice I used on The Simpsons over the years, just here and there.

and this part.

Azaria: Well, I grew up a Mets fan. The jacket is pure Lindsey Nelson, .......

There’s elements of all these guys [Bob Murphy voice]. I mean, Bob Murphy, who did the Mets, was sort of more guttural Jim Brockmire, who I grew up listening to along with Lindsey Nelson. There’s elements of these guys, but really, it’s sort of the middle-of-the-road aspect to it, the indistinctiveness of it that fascinated me. This voice also seemed to sell you stuff on television back in the ’70s. [Announcer voice] The ginsu knife and Roncos, kitchen magician also seemed to have this voice.
You know how [in] the old Mary Tyler Moore Show, Ted Baxter was almost more about his voice than even his abilities as a newsman? Brockmire is sort of out of that school, it’s almost more about being charismatic and deep voiced, than it is about his baseball knowledge, although he is very knowledgeable about baseball. He was the man in Kansas City. He was the youngest guy to ever call professional games, and it’s a love letter to those kind of guys who are sort of a dying breed.

The Nationals are putting on a base running clinic tonight: a clinic for what NOT to do. Bryce Harper was thrown out attempting a delayed steal of 3B when he thought Suzuki was not paying attention or recovering from a pitch quickly enough. Now Adam Eaton just plain got thrown out on a conventional steal of 2B as he was retreating to 1B. 2 TOOTBLANs for the price of one!

Jason Heyward's isolated slugging is .042 (1 extra base hit so far this year). Eric Thamses' is a tad better, at .600.
   39. cardsfanboy Posted: April 18, 2017 at 09:25 PM (#5437759)
Seriously, all Jose Martinez does is hit baseballs.

Cardinal announcers just got done listing his minor league batting average, and some of them are pretty impressive. (I get there is more than batting average, but AAA average of .384 in AA (98 games and 394 pa) should at least get you a September call up.
   40. Satan Says Posted: April 18, 2017 at 09:26 PM (#5437763)

Something very weird going on in Atlanta.

d'Arnaud foul tipped, Wieters stepped on the plate with bases loaded to end the game. But they're calling everyone back onto the field.

On such a play is the catcher required to throw to 1B to put out the batter-runner?

EDIT: Swing and miss to end the game for realsies this time. 3-1 FINAL. Now Jayson Werth SCREAMING at the umpires, look for a suspension in his future. A very weird ending to a very messed up game.

C.B. Bucknor had a totally unpredictable Bayesian strike zone. He should be fired...straight into the Sun.
   80. cardsfanboy Posted: April 18, 2017 at 10:44 PM (#5437850)

Montero throws a straight fastball 92-93 MPH that he can't control. He can't throw his secondary pitches for strikes. He is basically throwing batting practice when he isn't walking guys.

Cardinals record their second save of the season(got their first yesterday) now have 3-3 record in 1 run games (which honestly feels like there were about 4 more 1 run games, but a few of them the pen turned 1 run games in the 8th inning into 4 run games)
   84. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: April 18, 2017 at 10:50 PM (#5437856)
Montero is just giving up frozen ropes to everybody. He is absolutely defenseless against major league hitters. There's no reason for him to be on the team.

On a foul tip? Did it hit the dirt?
   86. Bote Man Posted: April 18, 2017 at 10:53 PM (#5437858)
On a foul tip? Did it hit the dirt?

I guess the final ruling was that it was not a foul tip? Or sumpin. Whatever the result, they ruled the game was not, in fact, over. For as crappy a night as Bucknor was having it could've been right down the exact center of the strike zone, caught by Wieters and he would've called it a ball. Gawd knows.
   87. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: April 18, 2017 at 10:58 PM (#5437859)
well that got close in a hurry. Jays with 3 in the ninth to make it 8-7
   88. cardsfanboy Posted: April 18, 2017 at 10:58 PM (#5437860)
I'm still not getting the situation. What was the count, what was the call by the ump, why would Wieters step on the plate(only reason he would step on the plate would be a strike called in the dirt) etc.... a foul tip caught would never require him to step on the plate.

   91. Newtype Posted: April 18, 2017 at 11:00 PM (#5437863)
I was watching the Nationals @ Braves game on TV. The situation was as follows:

Bottom of the 9th, 2 outs, bases loaded, 2 strike count. Nationals ahead 3-1.

The Nationals pitcher threw the ball. The braves batter swung his bat, missed the ball by about a foot, and the pitch hit the dirt. Wieters then picked up the ball, got up, and touched touched home plate for the force out to end the game.

Umpire then made the signal for foul tip, then made the signal for an out. Players started leaving the field.

TV feed starts showing highlights. Then it abruptly comes back with the announcers saying the ump had ruled it a foul tip, so the game continues. Then the Braves batter then struck out swinging on the next pitch to end the game. Werth was yelling at the home plate ump after the game ended (for real this time). Very weird.
   92. Jose is an Absurd Doubles Machine Posted: April 18, 2017 at 11:02 PM (#5437865)
Cfb - if it was a swing and miss the catcher could step on the plate with the bases loaded rather than tagging the batter or throwing to first to complete the strikeout.

I've been trying to digest what happened. I'm still not sure, but here's Keith Law's tweet that shows a still image of the offending call.

Here's a video clip of the offending call.
   94. The Yankee Clapper Posted: April 18, 2017 at 11:07 PM (#5437871)
I switched to another game when the Nationals game "ended" the first time, and missed the controversy on C. B. Buckner calling a swing & miss a foul tip in the dirt, but isn't that reviewable? Seems like it should be. Bucknor called a bad game, and then it looks to have gotten worse.
