NYT: Lewis: The No-Stats All-Star

The virus that infected professional baseball in the 1990s, the use of statistics to find new and better ways to value players and strategies, has found its way into every major sport.

In its spirit of inquiry, this subculture inside professional basketball is no different from the subculture inside baseball or football or darts. The difference in basketball is that it happens to be the sport that is most like life.

Pa’s got things for you to do!

Yes, Bill Bradley was an all-time memorable college player at Princeton, and his hoops hall selection is based in significant part on that...

I've never understood why Mike Hall hasn't received a NBA opportunity. He would fit the Battier role very well - he's a strong defender who can defend any of the 5 positions although he's limited athletically. He can knockdown an open jumper, but never really create his own shot. Plus, he's a great rebounder.

I thought for sure one of the teams would have found a way to get him on their bench by now and have him be a lockdown defender for stretches of the game.

I don't know who Hall is and your link goes nowhere. But in a similar vein, I was always surprised John Linehan of Providence never got a chance. He collected a ridiculous number of steals in college. I remember a few years Kobe Bryant called him the toughest defender he had ever faced (I guess they played in high school?). I guess he was too small for the NBA. He sure shot like #### in his brief D-league stint.

As much as things get bogged down here with meta or hijacked threads, I think it's random luck that this site exists and developed as is. I mean, tracking number of comments, and having a last comment/hot topic sidebar is really simple (I assume, as not being very tech savvy), but lots of sites don't have it. And for some reason, there is a right mix to sustain multiple very active threads, that most forums can't match.

You may be right.

The link should be to "Mike_Hall_(basketball_player)", not "Mike_Hall_basketball_player".

I asked Justin Kubatko about Battier. He said that for the last two years, he was 24th in win shares, which means he would be the top player on a decent number of teams. So there are ways that people are measuring his value.

Don't know about these specific guys, but the NBA game is faster for all, and some guys fit right in, and others get drownded with the tide.

Also there's the "tweener" issue in the NBA...

Thanks Crispix, here's two other pages about him with limited professional statistics. Hall's a 6'8" tweener with a limited offensive game. In his senior year, he was the 44th most efficient offensive player in the NCAA according to Ken Pomeroy (and he was 2nd) as a junior. He's limited offensively, but he was very unselfish, could make the open jumper (even from 3), and never made a stupid decision with the ball.

Still, defense is where his game is centered: the guy could and would guard everyone. He could shutdown everyone from David to Delonte West.
