Rays expected to grab Beckham No. 1
The MLB.com feed isn't a simulcast of ESPN2 is it?
Half and half.
"Oh, you didn't know? Your ass better calllllll somebody!"
Jason Kendall used to use the "clean" version of that as his intro music in Pittsburgh.
Castro at #8? Wow, didn't see that coming.
I'm always wary of fast risers. I'm skeptical about Lawrie as well as Buster Posey. Jason Castro and Brett Wallace seem to be rising quite a bit too.
I'm sorry, but I think everyone should want this guy on their team for his name alone.
come to think of it, this could be an all-time great draft for names: Shooter Hunt? Tanner Scheppers? Christian Friedrich? Quoth the Banya, "that's gold, Jerry, gold!"
The O's were in first place for the 1989 Draft when they took Ben McDonald.
Nope, the Twins took Joe Mauer with the standings like this.
Does MLB take an NFL approach to the televising of the draft? I love that -- 10,000 morbidly obese guys with tent-sized Jets jerseys and bad mustaches, packed tightly inside Radio City Music Hall.
I think Lawrie is much more substance than hype, and he belongs in the 11-15 range.
Neither did Batista.
I think because its a one year surge in power - a la Brady Anderson. Now its different because he's a college kid, and college kids go through growth spurts or learn how to drive the ball more. But that does raise a few red flags.
Hey, is Jim Callis going to drink some coffee or something before appearing on ESPN this year?
We'll know it's like the NFL draft if Berman is hosting and right before a pick is announced, but after some tech guy has seen the card and told Berman who it is in his ear, Berman says "I have a feeling this is gonna be Posey," and then after it's announced, the other guys on the panel fellate him for being so swami-rific.
He doesn't have a great arm, and he doesn't have a lot of experience behind the plate, so some of his defense is projection rather than ability (which is kind of scary for a #1 overall pick). He may not have wood bat power, as you note.
Thus, there's a lot more downside risk with him than with some of the other top guys. I think he belongs in the first, but not as high as he is.
YMMV, of course.
You forgot to include that said Jets fans go batshit crazy for the selection of a player they couldn't pick out of a lineup.
Wallace is at least rising for a good reason: People are realizing that his body type hasn't limited him as much as they think it would. Lawrie's the one I'm skeptical of. He had a great week recently, but in scouting videos he seems to be struggling with pitch recognition more than a top prospect should.
Pirates will probably take Alvarez, Royals will likely take Hosmer, O's seem to like Matusz.
KLaw said that'd be a major overdraft, and I just don't see that happening. The only reason they'd be doing it is for "family" purposes, and God-son isn't close enough to waste a 1st round pick on.
I don't understand the Posey skepticism at all. He's having the best season a college catcher has had since....I don't even know.
Because he's still new to catcher, the power is pretty new, and lots of Florida St. players put up insane numbers and then not hit for power in the majors. That ballpark is a launching pad.
I'm always wary of fast risers. I'm skeptical about Lawrie as well as Buster Posey. Jason Castro and Brett Wallace seem to be rising quite a bit
Really? Wallace was in the top 10 about two weeks ago, and now he's falling into the late teens. 2-3 weeks ago, the White Sox were all over him, and now it seems like he'll fall to Toronto.
Tell that to Lasorda...
ok they didn't "waste" a first rounder on Piazza... and if they had, well it wouldn't have been a waste... greatest nepotism pick of all time.
Didn't some GM draft their granddaughter once in the late rounds? I still remember the Reds drafting Notre Dame QB Carlyle Holliday, who I believe didn't even play baseball, and playing the ND fight song as they announced their pick.
That was the White Sox. This sort of stuff happens in the late rounds, a lot of teams even pass late round picks, but drafting for family with your first top 10 pick in 18 years? I don't see that happening.
In the great Youtube video of Jets draft disasters, there is one scene that is a credit to Jets fans. En masse they are chanting "We want Sapp! We want Sapp!" Of course, it follows that "The New York Jets select Kyle Brady, tight end..."
The other great scene is Mel Kiper saying, "Well, we all thought they were going to take Marino here, but obviously the Jets know something that we don't."
High school players taken: I took Under 13
College/JC players taken: Over 17
This is first 30 picks only. Am I a stone cold lock winner?
I just hope I didn't miscount the Klaw's and Callis's mock drafts.
I guess some team could draft a surprise Cuban defector, or something like that.

He struggled through the middle of the year, and his windup is really violent.
Because of the low limits...I couldn't put it all on just one bet.
I bet the Under 13 at -115 ($115 to win $100) odds. After I bet it for the max, the line moved to -150.
Since I wanted to bet it again, I could either bet the Under 13 at -150 ($150 to win $100), or the Over 17 college/JC at -115 odds. I chose the -115.
Can you name the four #1 overall picks that have never played big league ball?
Brien Taylor
I would like to see the meeting where a junior scout is reprimanded for comparing a prospect's body to Bo Jackson's.
Kevin Goldstein says that, "You hear some scouts say he's a superstar, and just as many say he'll never make it past A ball"
Wow.
Que?
Bo is generally considered one of the greatest athletes to ever play baseball.
Bo Jackson was the best athlete most scouts have ever seen (apparently an 80 on the 20-80 scale for at least four of the "five tools"). Comparing Hewitt to him implies that Hewitt is by far the most athletic player in any of the drafts in the past fifteen years, which is a pretty far-reaching statement.
Well, they're not selling jeans. Or sneakers. Or action figures. Or whatever else Bo sold.

Bo knows comps.
(Showoff! :)

anyone not at work want to liveblog for us?
Has a team ever had the number one pick and made the playoffs in the same season?
I didn't look it up, and I'd be surprised if the other guys did.
I read it the other way.
As in, no prospect will ever match Bo Jackson's athleticism, so don't go there.
That's also how I interpreted it.
Me 3.
That's also how I interpreted it.
What a weird thing to forbid.
Best part is, they're not even on the clock yet! Now, did they have him pre-record it, or did they just use last year's sound bite?
There was an article about the scout that signed him a few years ago. He works at a grocery store now. He liked Pujols, but questioned his ability to hit for any kind of power.
He's putting me to sleep.
plants
Wolff, Werner, Loria etc etc etc.
Can someone post picks as they happen for us TV-challenged folks?
Hasn't happened yet.
The Rays just went on the clock, then in the interest of speed, ESPN went to commercial.
plants
He musta watered them really well.
