The Oklahoma Daily: Johnny Bench starts new career as a motivational speaker

Can Bench succeed?  You Bettger!...uhh, I mean…You Betcher! *

After a stellar baseball career, Bench has found a new job. He is now a motivational speaker and has come up with “Vowels of Success.”

“I had been speaking,” he said about how the idea originated. “I wasn’t sure what to really talk about. I started to look at my notes and see what my focus was.”

The Vowels of Success are: A - attitude you have each day. E - effort for excellence. I - being the best individual and accepting responsibilities. O - taking advantage of opportunities that come around. U - using the knowledge and information provided to you.

“People are now using their own versions for the vowels. It’s fun, simple and keeps people paying attention to what I’m saying.”

* (Frank Bettger was Frank Betcher in a past life)

I'm Johnny Bench. And this is Johnny Bench's bench seat in his van down by the river.

I - being the best individual and accepting responsibilities.

That is inane.

When I first read the article I could have sworn it said "Bowels of Excellence".

Possibly I need new glasses.

Actually, it was pretty good as far as professional motivational speakers go.

What a silly profession.

By the way, every year from 7-14, I played in a Fourth of July tournament at Johnny Bench field in Binger, OK. As far as I know he never attended the tournament named after him, which would've been nice.

My take: Motivational gobbledygook doesn't read as well as it does in person.
