The Proof is in the Pudding: Liriano’s Latest Start

A couple of days ago I made a case for why Francisco Liriano deserved to be in the Twins rotation, and last night Liriano presented his own case to the Twins.

In 7 innings against Toledo, Liriano struck out 10, while giving up only 2 hits and 2 walks. Since simple stats don’t really describe how dominant he was, I wanted to give a quick inning-by-inning breakdown of Liriano’s start…

I love it when people post their own stuff. I always wonder how they pick the money quote.

Give Livan one more start against Cleveland, then DFA or trade him and bring up Liriano for the first game of the White Sox series. I would think that MN could get almost as much for Livan as Houston paid for Randy Wolf.

Toledo has quite a collection of recognizable names hanging around in their lineup.

But is there another team out there as deluded as the Astros?

Braves?

Back home to the Marlins might work.

The Yankees have Ponson, they are set.

I posted this the other day, but here again is Bill Smith on Livan Hernandez's suckitude:

I'll take the wins. Who do you want, a guy who's 10-15 with a 2.80 ERA or a guy who's 16-8 with a 7.00 ERA? I'll take the 16-8.

He's talking about results. At the end of the year, looking at the stat sheet, he'd rather see wins than losses. I don't blame him. I don't believe for a second that Bill Smith (or any GM, for that matter) would prefer to acquire the second player over the first, in this case.

Also, it's unreasonable to expect Bill Smith to do anything but support his pitchers to the media, especially since this one is a possible trading chip.

If this string of outstanding Lirano starts had occurred in May the author might be right in Demanding Action, but right now he's doing his best to ignore the 800 lb fact that most roster moves in mid-July occur in the context of the trade deadline. We're a week away and he's pointing fingers like there's a person on earth who doesn't agree the kid is ready. Right now there are folks all over baseball waiting to see if they'll be traded, cut, promoted, whatever and Liriano is one of them. It's part of what makes this time of the season fun to watch.
