The Province: Larry Walker: This is where all started

And Larry Walker knows where it won’t all end…

Q: Cooperstown? The Baseball Hall of Fame? Do you think you have a shot at it now?

A: No. No chance. I’ll stick by my guns saying I don’t have a chance but I’d be honoured just getting some votes. The MVPs and the batting titles ... I won some awards and did some things during some years but Cooperstown is head and shoulders above anything else because of who’s in there and what’s in there. Guys like Jim Rice or Andre Dawson who should be in there, and they can’t get in. They had amazing careers. I’d be happy getting a few votes. That’s the truth. I’m happy with that.

Larry Walker is one player who I wish hadn't had the injury problems he did. Even playing in Coors for the time he did, I think he would have had a HOF career if he could have stayed healthy.

I remember when he was traded to the Cardinals, I would watch game highlights on mlb.com, and I can honestly say, I haven't seen the ball jump off another player's bat like it did Larry Walker's.

Jim Rice: 9058 PA, 128 OPS+, 315 GDP, 58-34 SB-CS, so-so LF.
Larry Walker: 8030 PA, 140 OPS+, 153 GDP, 230-76 SB-CS, excellent RF.

Even though his MVP should have gone to Mike Piazza, that makes Walker yet another in the line of corner outfielders clearly more Hall-qualified than Rice.

His Hall of Merit candidacy will be interesting. I haven't worked through his case well enough to make a prediction, but he's not going to be easily dismissed. He looks at first glance to be extremely similar to Reggie Smith, and Smith is on the edge of possible HoM induction.

That's the complete list. It just goes to show that members of the BBWAA have been very successful in pushing their anti-Canadian agenda.

Larry Walker is falling on his sword here, so he can help all of Canada rally around Matt Stairs as Canada's HOF hope.
