The Real McCoy: A man and his dog

To nick an old Brink & Belzer routine…

A - Dusty Baker is nuts!
2 - Dusty Baker is nuts!

Asked about being back in baseball after a year off, Dusty said, “I enjoyed spending time with my son, my wife, my daughter and my dog. My dog is 11-years-old and I miss my dog. That’s the best woman in my life.” Baker’s 9-year-old son heard that comment and quickly said, “I’m going to call mom and tell her.”

“I love my mom, my sisters, my daughters, everybody, and it’s no slight on anybody, but my dog (Bailey, a German short-haired pointer) - well, my wife knows how I feel about my dog. My wife ain’t never run and got no pheasant for me. Best hunting dog I ever had and don’t they always talk about man and his dog? Ain’t no slight on any women in my wife.

...Baker went on to talk about his two young pitching sensations - Johnny Cueto and Edinson Volquez - and how he relates to them.

“These guys know what is at stake and they’re hungry and I like hungry guys,” said Baker. “Do you know the pressure that is on these guys? They’re from another country (Dominican Republic) and probably their parents and family don’t have much. It’s the first time in their lives they have a chance to make some money. There is something to hunger - and need.”

So Homer is already in the doghouse?

He probably overwalks his dog.

Dusty probably would have come home with a lot more pheasants, but he insisted on leaving his best dogs in the kennel because they weren't proven veterans.

Dusty reminds me of two women I used to sit to in my office. One was from Hong Kong and the other was from Jamaica. They each had their own set of cultural sterotypes about just about everyone, but their stereotypes didn't match each other's so they would get into bizarre arguments about whether Italians were lazy or if synagogues were all ugly and so on. I had a good time listening to them, actually.

This is Dusty Baker we're talking about. I bet the dog rarely walks.

Bailey, a German short-haired pointer

I hope he goes hunting at night. Germans aren't suited for activity under the sun, unlike, for example, a chihuahua.

Marty & Brantley are both confident Votto will be the Opening Day 1st baseman. Votto blasted a 3 run hr to cf today off Paul Maholm. Both also think Jay Bruce should be the CF but are resigned to Dusty going with Patterson.

He likes his dog to be aggressive. Pees on the first tree it sees.

How much do you want to bet that at some point in his managerial career Baker made personnel decisions based on whether or not his dog liked a particular player? A guy like Darren Lewis comes to mind.

Still, he's a better manager than the two idiots that the Giants have brought in since he left.

I bet he leaves his dog out too long even after all the pheasants have been recovered!

Just reminded me my dog is out in the rain right now, had to go let him in, I can't hear him barking from this room.

The current dog's in the clear when it comes to Darren Lewis.

I hope he doesn't decide to start his dog over Jay Bruce.

Ain’t no slight on any women in my wife.

Was this a typo in the excerpt? The possiblities are... substantial. One hopes for at least one woman in one's wife. Um. Or maybe not.
