The Real McCoy: Arroyo: Please keep me

Arroyo pleaded his case strongly and, yes, friends in New York tell him his name is mentioned loud and often about Yankee pin-stripes.

“Honestly, if they trade me, they’re saying, ‘That’s it, we’re not going to build a winning team here,’” he said. “The starters we have have a chance to pitch here a long time, health-wise and age-wise.

“If they go ahead and trade me out now because of the salary I’ll make next year ($25 million in 2009 and 2010), then I feel they’re just cashing in the money for a losing team,” Arroyo added.

“When I see Bob Castellini I feel like he’s a guy who wants to win and I don’t think he is ready to say, ‘That’s it. I’ve put in as much as I want to put in, then go ahead and start tearing the pieces apart. I hope the vibes I get from him are for real. If it’s not, I’ll have another surprise coming my way.”

Gaucha Guaro! Like some surprise Cal Tjader soul source vibes!

As a Yankee fan, I too want the Reds to keep him.

Bronson is getting killed away from GAB this season which is really odd since before he had done better at home versus away. With BA it's all about the home runs. When he keeps the ball in the park he succeeds. You look at his splits and when he has a bad stretch he is giving up more homers. He is durable and there is value in that.

The Reds are slowing inching forward as Edwin is now slugging over .500, Bruce in the outfield and Votto set at first.

The team is still under .500 and 10 games out but if the fifth spot in the rotation wasn't so horrible you could see them possibly being a nuisance. But they can't spackle that gap and each day Cueto and Volquez getting tired and going south draws closer.

If Dunn leaves and with Griffey that much closer to being a complete millstone the 2009 Reds are going to be rebuilding again.

Leaving aside the competitiveness of the team, I actually think this is mildly touching and reflects well upon Arroyo personally. I remember how utterly crushed he was when he was first traded to Reds by the Red Sox (after signing a sweetheart contract that made it all too easy to do). He spoke back then about how he was going to go back to the East Coast at the first opportunity. Obviously his attitude has changed.

I'd be much happier with their recent performance if Coco hadn't completely tanked 2 games in the past week.

Arroyo is owed $25 M over the next two seasons?

And there are teams willing to trade for him?

Don't get me wrong, perfectly decent pitcher and, as one of the folks who didn't buy "Wily Mo Pena's top comp is Babe Ruth" (or whatever that Pecota nonsense was) and the importance of having real starting pitching depth, I've had a bit of a soft spot for Arroyo. But if the Reds can get someone to take on that contract, they should do it.
