The Significance of Minor League K-Rates

Admittedly, there are not a ton of revolutionary conclusions here.  Traditional prospecting wisdom is supported strongly, as it’s abundantly clear that, ceteris paribus, high strikeout rates are not helpful in a prospect’s development.  It appears as though the success rates for prospect development drop sharply when strikeout rates hit about 22%.  Furthermore, minor league strikeout rates are strongly negatively related with both major league at-bats and OPS.

However, among successfully developed prospects, minor league strikeout rates are positively related with major league OPS, indicating that the prospects that become the best MLB hitters tend to be sluggers with moderately high strikeout rates.  A second point to note is the abundance of defensive-minded players who don’t strikeout much, but also don’t produce much offensively.  Lastly, it’s clear that players tend to increase their strikeout rates in the minors upon graduation to the majors by about 1%.

This is actually a really in-depth article , and well worth the read.  The comments are also worth a look.

Definitely an excellent read. I may save that information into a Word Doc just so I can always refer back to it. I will use this information a lot when it comes to scouting players for my DMB League. Also, in the comments RSF goes the other direction and finds that of the 20 players from the list that had K Rates under 10%, 18 of them went on to have successful MLB careers. I think most of us knew this, but it's nice to see some statistics and cutoff points, etc.

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but...hasn't everything in this article already been covered? I remember BPro doing a story a few years back on how Ks were a GOOD thing when projecting minor league power hitters, up to a certain threshold (with some glaring exceptions). In addition, it just seems very common-sensical and is the reason people on this board and others have long mistrusted the Dallas McPhersons and Brandon Wood's of the prospecting world. I commend this guy for taking the time to do all this, but I just don't think he broke any ground whatsoever here.

IS there selection bias in action? If teams rely on Ks as an opportunity creation stat, then this keeps people from getting the chance.

Ks correlate with HRs. There's a tradeoff with swinging for hte fences and missing the ball. The majors learned this in the 1950s, I think.

It is a nice article and a fun look at stats.
