The Southern: New York City, our baseball story is better than yours!

The wackiest “Challenge Trade” ever!

When Sesser Mayor Ned Mitchell throws out a challenge he doesn’t fool around. He sets his sights really high. Mitchell, who has served as the top elected official in Sesser (population 2,228) for more than 25 years, has declared “literary war” against Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City (population 8,143,197). Along with that, Mitchell is also leading a public relations campaign aimed at getting the attention of television megastar Oprah Winfrey.

What has Mitchell and other Sesser residents issuing a challenge to one of the world’s most powerful mayors in one of the world’s most dynamic cities and extending an invitation to one of the world’s best known celebrities is the book “Playing With the Enemy: A Baseball Prodigy, a World at War, and a Field of Broken Dreams.”

...Mitchell has challenged Bloomberg to “a fair review of each city’s hometown baseball book to let the people of America decide which is better.” In his letter Mitchell encouraged Bloomberg to fairly review “Playing with the Enemy” and he promised the same honest Southern Illinois review of “The Echoing Green.”

These are the guys that did an article on Gary Geiger aren't they?

"The Echoing Green" is a tough competitor. Has anyone here read "Playing With The Enemy"?

What, you're not willing to take his hometown's word on it that it's really great?

Anyway, bully for them for trying this.

I haven't read either, but both cities are going to have a tough time competing with Dyersville, Iowa.

Hello all. Just found this site and love it. I wanted to add a few comments. By way of disclosure, I am the Managing Director of Savas Beatie LLC, the publisher of "Playing with the Enemy," by Gary Moore. The whole Sesser Mayor challenging NYC is not only creative but hiliarious and getting decent media play (The Chicago Tribune called, for example, Mayor Bloomberg's office is "interested," and the Letterman show is suddenly paying attention). Gary's book is going to made into a major motion picture (filming next year) by an Oscar-winning producer, and we think the story is exceptional. I hope you will take the time to check out www.playingwiththeenemy.com/mouse.htm for more on the Mayor challenge, and if you want to see the latest unpublished Sesser vs. NYC cartoon, send me an email at militarybooks@sbcglobal.net and I will forward it to you. It is a hoot. Merry Xmas. tps
