The Sporting News: Baseball remembers Gary Carter

But as Pete Kerzel keenly points out…“Nice remembrance of Gary Carter at AOL/Sporting News. One small problem, though: How did Dick Williams, who died last summer, offer his thoughts on Carter’s passing? Nice to have an obit/remembrance all ready to go, better to make sure someone looks closely at it before publishing.”

Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter died Thursday at age 57 following a battle with brain cancer.

Baseball is mourning the loss and remembering the legend. A sampling of that reaction, courtesy of the Hall of Fame:

...“Johnny Bench was the No. 1 catcher of the 70s. Gary Carter (was) the No. 1 catcher of the 80s.” — Hall of Fame manager Dick Williams

When Johnny Carson died in 2005, one news outlet rang up Rodney Dangerfield's agent. "Rodney did The Tonight Show more than any other comic... Can we get a quote from him on Johnny's passing?"

Long pause.

Rodney's agent: "...Rodney died three months ago."

Jon Stewart had a great bit on that when Bob Hope's NYT obituary was written by Vincent Canby, who had predeceased him by several years. "Wouldn't that be awkward, to run into him at a party? 'Hey, Bob, how's it going?' 'Pretty good, Vince. What're you working on?' '....Nothing.' "
