The Transformation of Alex Rodriguez (SI)

This January, Rodriguez spent two weeks as a guest speaker in lecturer Allison Kluger’s class on strategic pivoting and reputation management at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. “From crisis comes a decisive moment,” says Kluger. “You can make the moment work for you, or you can crawl into a hole and wait for something else to come. Alex didn’t wait.”

Rodriguez did SoulCycle with the class’s 25 students, and ordered them all a Chipotle dinner (although, as a health nut, he didn’t himself eat a burrito). The highlight of the course, most agreed, was when he narrated his own crisis, though he didn’t get into exactly what substances he ingested or injected, or when or why; he’s never done that, publicly. Even so, all 25 course evaluations offered raves. “Alex’s superpower is his storytelling,” wrote one student. “He was able to engage and connect with every student.”

A portrait of Alex Rodriguez’ life in retirement.

For the record, as far as the centaur paintings: “Never true.”

An entire website weeps.

Oh sure, NOW he's fine with it being "him and 25 kids." Eff you, A-Roid.

I was on a boat tour in Miami and was shown ARod's house and you better believe I went for the binoculars real fast to try and catch some centaur action through the windows. Nothing doing though.

#5 exactly my thought as well.

Also not sure that A-Rod is the guy I would look to for lessons. I mean, he has rehabilitated his image somewhat post-retirement, and but that’s only impressive in part because of how much he screwed it up while playing. His public appearances and interviews back then were just cringe-worthy.

More specifically...

Stanford’s Graduate School of Business.

MBA classes are nothing but spin classes. Nothing but sell, sell, sell (yourself, your product, your idea, your company...)

I've seen ARod on Shark Tank, and he's absolutely insufferable. He's a bright guy, but he thinks he's some kind of genius.
   10. Cris E Posted: July 18, 2019 at 11:31 AM (#5862848)
The guy has never been humbled by anything that wasn't his own doing. When he chooses to change it usually works, and he's been able to surround himself with people that affirm his awesomeness, which is objectively pretty real. He's just sort of an unlikable tool.

But it's really hard to be likable to the broader world if you fundamentally aren't like real people. Jennifer Laurence, for example, is (was? I am hardly hip) well-loved because she's self-deprecating, dopey-cute and somewhat clumsy and the world loves her despite money, success, great looks and rumors of plastic surgery. She's not one of us, but if we ever found ourselves in that world we might be like that. J-Lo saying "Be yourself" is probably the best advice, but what if you're an ass? I don't know, according to the people who actually know him (including his daughter and ex-wife) he's figuring it out, so here's a hat tip. We should all be so lucky to figure things out at some point.

Often, people who struggled with something before eventually figuring it out are better teachers than those for whom it always came naturally.

I can't stand A-Rod, although it's hard to separate my dislike for him post-baseball from my dislike for him when he was playing. That said, everything out of his mouth comes across as disingenuous.

How do you fake rehabilitating your image?

“I realized afterwards he was a little nervous, saying all this stuff you would never say on a first date,” Lopez says. Then he excused himself to go to the bathroom, and shortly thereafter her phone vibrated. YOU LOOK SEXY AS F---, he’d texted her.

“Actually, it was good game, because it was very unexpected and it was super flattering,” she says.
Jeter was waiting in the restroom as A-Rod's Cyrano. I hope he remembered the gift basket.

After that, he sent her a gift
That's how you do it.

This is a fair point. Anyway, having read the article I was unaware of a lot about A-Rod's post-playing career life, and was probably selling him short. There's a lot more beyond just the excerpt -- it's a good read.

How do you fake rehabilitating your image?

Right. A-Rod has successfully rehabilitated his image and relationships with many people. Whether he has actually changed as a person or just substituted new insecurities/vices for the old ones, who knows? There are definitely some red flags in the article. And he's fooled people once before, so to speak, so I wouldn't blame anyone for being skeptical.

You fake acting like a normal person (even though you're the same jackass as before) and your image improves.

Really? That's flattering? It's profane and meaningless. I can't stand the way people use the f-bomb (or the s-bomb) now.

Also juvenile. A 40+ y.o. man really can't compliment a woman's appearance in person, and without profanity? Sad.

"YOU LOOK SEXY AS FIP" would work as well here as it did on J-Lo.

Sending a book called "Grit" as a follow-up definitely wouldn't, though.

After that, he sent her a gift: a copy of the bestselling book Grit, by Angela Duckworth, which is subtitled, “The power of passion and perseverance.” He told her, “This just reminds me of you.”
   23. Cris E Posted: July 18, 2019 at 04:05 PM (#5863001)

Is 36 middle-aged? I thought I had a few years left, but I guess I'm there in spirit.

No one will ever mistake me for a poet, but I guess I miss the days when comparing a woman to some sort of beautiful natural phenomenon was the way to go. Still juvenile maybe, but at least it made sense.

If we're going for BBTF pickup lines:

"You interested in heading to the Play Index with me?"
   25. bunyon Posted: July 18, 2019 at 05:12 PM (#5863031)
If we're only talking about social behavior, faking it is making it. Most of us fake it. When I say that my friends' kids are cute, I'm faking it. If I was "myself" and said, "Man, you're kids are annoying as hell," that wouldn't be nice. I get that. Would hurt the friendship. So, I lie. It's what a lot of socially acceptable behavior is.

If A-Rod learned to fake that, good for him.

As for pickup lines, yeah, they vary. My guess is, just as snapper and JAHV think that line bad, they wouldn't actually want to get anywhere with J-Lo. Nor she them.

I'd take a hundred A-Rods over Jeter. Though I doubt I'd personally like either of them very much. Nor they me.

"Consider this an opportunity for dialogue and excitation"

"I for one am sick and tired of players like Chris Truby and Albert Belle failing to acknowledge how beautiful you are. And Mike Crudale."
   27. Itchy Row Posted: July 18, 2019 at 05:27 PM (#5863042)
BBTF's greatest pickup line mentioned J-Lo. Well, Jay-Lo.

first of all colin farrell is on great actor look at phone booth and tigerland and the recruit with al pacino. so in three years became on the a-list of actors and colin is in demand now, now he is shooting alexander the great with angelina jolie. and he also worked with samuel jackson on swat which was great by the way. and bruce willis in harts war. so he worked with alot of great big actors. and was great in minority report with tom cruise. and daredevil and the villian bullseye with ben affleck. and colin was the best thing in the movie and the critics agree. so colin is a way better actor then ben affleck. im responding to the post from alex about at least ben affleck got some credit under his belt but colin is hotter and a better actor and he is getting alot more movies then ben. so please did you see bens last movie with jay-lo called gigli. need i say more the movie sucked as hell and even the critics said the worst movie of the century. it only made 20 million in the theatres now thats sad.

That line has never failed.

You fake acting like a normal person (even though you're the same jackass as before) and your image improves.

Sure, but someone who does that successfully is precisely the kind of person you'd want to get image rehabilitation advice from, which was the whole point in the first place.

The point is: you can't fake image rehab. Either your reputation improves or it doesn't. And if being a better person was all it took, there'd be no need for Stanford to professionally train spin doctors.

- well, yeah. all yall should know by now that different lines work on different grrls

y know, this might could come as a surprise to most of you, but there are SOME males who actually DO grow up. a-rod went to a therapist, not a make image over person, and did some work on himself. therapy works for people who are serious about it

sometimes you got to face that the way you think/behave only makes life he!! for you and you have the option of growing up and facing it.

there is only so long a non-actor or psychopath can fake it, especially to his ex-WIFE and his KIDS

maybe after all these years, he and jennifer have finally found someone who they are really comfortable with. younevahknow

I just think words should mean things. The f-bomb and the s-bomb are thrown around with such abandon, it's rendered them meaningless. They're verbal ticks or filler more than anything else, and they've been robbed of the sense of taboo that allowed them to be used for humor or emphasis. "Sexy as fu**" is good, but "fu**ed up" is bad, while the participial adjective "fu**ing" just means "very", if it means anything at all. You can say "Sh**, that's awesome" or "Sh**, that's awful" and the sh** somehow makes sense in either case. It's inane.

I curse on occasion, but when I do (usually out of frustration or to be humorous), it means something since I use the words rarely. I know I'm an old man at 36 shaking his fist at the clouds, lamenting the loss of "legitimate" and "legitimately", wishing that people cared about the English language the way I do. I know it's a lost cause. I can't keep it from bothering me, though.
