The Uncle Robby Birthday Dugout

If the Red Sox right side of the infield is above average and the left side is below average, how does that affect stats?  DOes it help their rightys and hurt their lefties?  Does it change park factors?

Is there a recognized distinction/division between Mets and Yankees fans like there is for Cubs and White Sox fans? Is NJ more Yankees and Long Island more Mets?

What about LA?

My hat is off to those guys who can blog regularly. I started a small niche one, but I'd like to post stuff more substantial than Primer posts. I wanted to write it before work, but it's tough to find the time. And I'm not as sharp in the evening. I guess I'll probably make a post about once a week.

Angel Salome has found his stride in Triple A. Both Escobar and Salome are playing regularly and more than holding their own.

Generally speaking, the Yankees have NJ and Staten Island while the Mets have Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island. I'd say Manhattan is roughly a split.

After all of those injuries to the pitching staff early on in the season, the old L.A. Angels of Anaheim are finally back, and have a 1.5 game lead in the division.

Agree with that. I suspect Manhattan is majority Yankees... probably most Manhattanite Met fans are originally from Brooklyn/Queens/LI, which is certainly a large number, but not a majority. And Connecticut is Yanks in the southern half, Red Sox in the northern half. (I think there have actually been articles posted here about the exact fan demography of CT.)

I think it is split diagonally from NW to SE. Here is an item on the latest poll. 42% Yankees, 38% Red Sox and 9% Mets.

DK, that looks like a score out of the Cincinnati Red Stocking's tour in 1869.

Matt Clark scored 7 runs in a 9-inning game. Among the game's other eye-popping numbers.

I thought that too, GGC...

From mlbtraderumors: Shawn Estes isn't retired, he just retired from AAA. (In his 'defense', it's his life/career, he's been around a long time, and he was doing quite nicely for Albuquerque. Otoh, he's Shawn Estes.)

What do you think: is it worth submitting this article looking at the NL wild card race? It's a long article and I know how people like just to go by the excerpt. And maybe it would just devolve into a big anti vs. pro wildcard argument anyway.

I knew my list seemed to be missing something. Yes, the Bronx is Yankee ground, as are the Northern NY burbs.

I think my favorite part of that box scores is that neither team scored in the 6th or 7th inning, but only one other half-inning in the entire game did a team not score. Did the batters need a rest?
   16. greenback Posted: June 29, 2009 at 04:27 PM (#3236630)
The High Desert game features an Ian Bladergroen sighting. I guess that wrist or hand or whatever has been slow to heal.

I think it's kind of s****y of Colletti to hold him hostage like that. Sure he signed the contract, but still, Colletti's holding out for what? What's he going to get in a trade for Shawn Estes? What is to be gained by playing hardball with a 36 year old journeyman who's just trying to pitch somewhere? Just give him his release like they always do for these kind of guys and let him try to move on.
   19. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: June 29, 2009 at 04:47 PM (#3236665)
Is there anyway to find out what pitchers threw the highest percentage of strikes in a start since they started keeping track of that? BBref PI only allows you to search by raw strike total.

Random trivia question:

Only seven pitchers in baseball history have started at least 150 games in doubleheaders. Who are they?
   21. SoSHially Unacceptable Posted: June 29, 2009 at 06:32 PM (#3236800)
Is Ted Lyons one?
   22. Dag Nabbit apealing [sic] his own check swing Posted: June 29, 2009 at 06:35 PM (#3236804)
Yup. Ted Lyons is one. He's top of the pack, actually:

1. Ted Lyons 178
2. ??? 169
3. ??? 168
4. ??? 167
5t. ??? 162
5t. ??? 162
7. ??? 159

Any guesses on the remaining half-dozen?
   23. Mike Webber Posted: June 29, 2009 at 06:37 PM (#3236808)
Cy Young
Walter Johnson
Warren Spahn
   24. Hack Wilson Posted: June 29, 2009 at 06:37 PM (#3236809)
I'm guessing the last one could have been Spahn
   25. Tom Nawrocki Posted: June 29, 2009 at 06:37 PM (#3236813)
Walter Johnson? Pete Alexander? Red Faber? Herb Pennock?
   26. Mike Webber Posted: June 29, 2009 at 06:38 PM (#3236814)
Early Wynn
Robin Roberts
Pete Alexander
Christy Mathewson
   27. Young Blasarius yonder Posted: June 29, 2009 at 06:40 PM (#3236817)
Joe McGinnity?
   28. Young Blasarius yonder Posted: June 29, 2009 at 06:41 PM (#3236820)
Pud Galvin?
   29. Mike Webber Posted: June 29, 2009 at 06:43 PM (#3236822)
If Ted Lyons then Red Faber?
   30. Dag Nabbit apealing [sic] his own check swing Posted: June 29, 2009 at 06:48 PM (#3236830)
Yes: Cy Young, Early Wynn, Robin Roberts.

1. Ted Lyons 178
2. Early Wynn 169
3. ??? 168
4. ??? 167
5t. ??? 162
5t. Robin Roberts 162
7. Cy Young 159

Young was the first man to do it. Roberts the last.
   31. Dag Nabbit apealing [sic] his own check swing Posted: June 29, 2009 at 06:51 PM (#3236837)
Totals for the others guessed, through post #29:

Pete Alexander 148
Walter Johnson 142
Christy Mathewson 136
Herb Pennock 125
Warren Spahn 125
Red Faber 114
Joe McGinnity 106
Pud Galvin 47
   32. Mike Webber Posted: June 29, 2009 at 06:53 PM (#3236842)
Eppa Rixey,
Bob Feller
Burleigh Grimes
   33. Dag Nabbit apealing [sic] his own check swing Posted: June 29, 2009 at 06:59 PM (#3236851)
Eppa Rixey is correct. He is the last National League answer.

1. Ted Lyons 178
2. Early Wynn 169
3. ??? 168
4. Eppa Rixey 167
5t. ??? 162
5t. Robin Roberts 162
7. Cy Young 159

As for the other guesses:
Bob Feller 141
Burleigh Grimes 123

The remaining two answers, aside from both being AL pitchers, were essentially contemporaries.
   34. Mike Webber Posted: June 29, 2009 at 07:00 PM (#3236853)
Eddie Plank and Sad Sam Jones
   35. Dag Nabbit apealing [sic] his own check swing Posted: June 29, 2009 at 07:03 PM (#3236861)
Too early.

Eddie Plank 117
Sad Sam Jones 121
   36. Mike Webber Posted: June 29, 2009 at 07:21 PM (#3236889)
Lefty Grove and Mel Harder
   37. Dag Nabbit apealing [sic] his own check swing Posted: June 29, 2009 at 07:28 PM (#3236895)
Much closer. It's around that time, but both answer had more overall starts than either Grove or Harder in addition to more doubleheader starts.

Grove 126
Harder 132

The two answers . . . 1930s/40s AL pitchers. One began his career very poorly, but had a sudden turnaround after a trade. He had tremendous offensive support for most of his career (it didn't hurt that he was a great hitting pitcher) and ended up in Cooperstown.

The other pitcher, an extremely durable four-decade player, had terrible offensive support and ended up nowhere near Cooperstown. (Thus making him the only one on the list who isn't an immortal). It's unlikely he ever got a single vote, in fact.
   38. Dag Nabbit apealing [sic] his own check swing Posted: June 29, 2009 at 07:30 PM (#3236898)
Actually, almost everyone in the top 20 has been mentioned. Not named yet:

Paul Derringer 149
Freddie Fitzsimmons 149
Bill Lee 144
Carl Hubbell 136
Bucky Walters 125
   39. Tom Nawrocki Posted: June 29, 2009 at 07:33 PM (#3236901)
Red Ruffing is the first one.

Yup. Red Ruffing and Bobo Newsom.

1. Ted Lyons 178
2. Early Wynn 169
3. Red Ruffing 168
4. Eppa Rixey 167
5t. Bobo Newsom 162
5t. Robin Roberts 162
