Theo Epstein Bringing Hot Stove Cool Music Event to Chicago Alongside Peter Gammons

Buffalo Tom again? Susan Tedeschi must have other commitments.

Epstein will help support Chicago Cubs charities and the Foundation To Be Named Later by hosting the inaugural Hot Stove Cool Music Chicago charity concert at Wrigleyville’s Metro on June 14.

Epstein will be joined by Hall of Famer Peter Gammons, Cubs broadcsters Len Kasper and Bob Brenly and a variety of comedians and musicians. Actors and comedians Mike O’Malley, Jeff Garlin and Joel Murray will emcee the event, while The Smashing Pumpkins, The Figgs, Jenny Dee and the Deelinquents and members of Buffalo Tom highlight the evening’s performances.

Not much of a Chicago flavor, band-wise.

Theo's buddies are Boston bands. I imagine he will get to know some of the Chicago bands as he sticks around.

For what it's worth I've been to a couple of these events in Boston and they are a ton of fun. Little baseball, lot of music, you really can't go wrong.

Also my cousin's husband is a Deelinquent so we got to go backstage. Mike O'Malley is awfully impressed with himself and Kevin Youkilis checked out my cousin.

What, they couldn't have sprung for Brian Doyle-Murray?

Shouldn't he be? I love the man but there is no tangible reason he should be famous. Damn impressive if you ask me.

Back in the day the Figgs were pretty awesome as a four piece. Recently and as a three piece I don't care for them as much.

How about Bryan LaHair sporting a 237 OPS+ in 100 PA so far? Tony Campana is sporting a 117 OPS+ with 7 steals in 55 PA. Ryan Dempster has a 372 ERA+ in 35 innings. Lefty James Russell has a 489 ERA+ in 12 games of relief.

Doesn't seem to make much sense to hold an event called "Hot Stove" during June, seeing as it referces "Hot Stove League". June isn't the offseason, no matter how far the Cubs have fallen out of the race.

Well, there's the Pumpkings... I guess I'm not up on who Billy Corgan has imported to piss off next (perhaps they're not local)... but yeah - I agree... and heck, if it's not Pitchfork: Wrigleyville, but more like Lollapalooza: Wrigleyville -- there's lot of choices from yesteryear... Urge Overkill, Liz Phair, Plain White Ts, Wilco... and I thought it was a requirement that Cheap Trick be at least invited to all local music fests (and if it's not, it should be, even if they're technically a Rockford band).

Maybe Billy Corgan will be frying James Iha in effigy?

Bring in Pegboy, I'm sure they're all around somewhere.

This should be an Illinois state law.

- Smith Westerns
- The Men
- Joan of Arc/Cap'n Jazz/Owen/Maritime/Promise Ring
- Andrew Bird
- The Sea & Cake
They would all be welcome inclusions.

Favorite places to see a show in Chicago:
1. Empty Bottle
2. Schubas
3. Subterranean
4. Lincoln Hall
5. Metro
6. The Vic
7. Aragon/Congress

Needs more Chris Berman.

Aragon is just the absolute worst.

The Men is my favourite album of the year easily so far.

At least a couple of them perform occasionally with Jake Burns, former frontman of Stiff Little Fingers, under the name "The Nefarious Fat Cats."

No Park West? That place is fantastic. And the Congress is godawful. Uncomfortable, nowhere to sit, crappy sound. I'll second the praises for Lincoln Hall, and I'll probably get kicked out of the Good Chicagoans Society for admitting that I've never been to the Empty Bottle.

Reggie's would be on my list of favorites as well. Also the Double Door. And the Abbey.

I've been to each of Park West (Colin Meloy solo show), Double Door (Pipettes) & Abbey Pub (Chris Thile I think) only once; they're all OK, I like them better than the larger Vic/Congress/Aragon places. I haven't been to Reggies.

I'd put in a vote for Eleventh Dream Day.

I'm a big fan of the Hideout, partially because of its absurd location.
   23. Dave Spiwak Posted: May 09, 2012 at 08:24 PM (#4127759)
What's Bryan LaHair's deal? I don't expect him to keep up the pace of monster slugging (~.800), but can he finish the season with an OPS around .900?

No kidding, Gern. Even I've been to the Empty Bottle, and I've only been to something like a half dozen shows here in town.
   25. zonk Posted: May 09, 2012 at 09:15 PM (#4127821)
Thumbs up to Double Door, the Abbey, and the Hideout... The absurd location is part of the Hideout's charm -- since it's so far (relative to Chicago generally) off any main streets, it's impossible to get a cab (and being the type that enjoys his cocktails at a show, I don't drive). Being a sometimes proper hipster, we usually stumble to Marie's Riptide (RIP, Marie) after shows -- a fairly decent hike.
   26. zonk Posted: May 09, 2012 at 09:16 PM (#4127824)
I'd also toss a shout out The Elbo Room -- I think they just did a renovation, haven't been in since - but have seen many fine shows there...
   27. SouthSideRyan Posted: May 09, 2012 at 11:24 PM (#4127960)
Elbo Room is great. I've seen many a friend's band there along with other random shows (one first date, she was a keeper, I apparently was not)

.

Obligatory disclaimer: Peter Gammons is ,of course, not a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.He is a member of the Aging Baby Boomers who like that Rock 'n Roll Music, a much larger group.

Who knows? His babip is off the charts right now. That will come down, and he is striking out a little more than one might like. The good things are that he's going deep in counts even when he doesn't walk, and he is unafraid to go the opposite way. Both will suit him well when the rest of the NL figures out "Hey, Soriano is on deck. Why the heck are we pitching to this guy?"

Ditto--not sure how I forgot to mention it yesterday.

Though I have to say, the logistics for their annual block party are terrible (at least, they were last year). 2 beer lines and 1 set of portajohns for a good-sized open air festival? Give me a break.
   31. Gern Blanston Posted: May 10, 2012 at 11:20 AM (#4128170)
Oh, and how could I forget Rosa's Lounge. Best blues bar in the city, for my money.

These days, Joel is the #2 Murray.

I miss living in the city.

It's at the Metro and the Cubs are involved, I'm pretty sure Billy Corgan is contractually obligated to be involved.
