Theo Epstein Compensation: Cubs Send Chris Carpenter To Red Sox

And you were a…compensation.

The Chicago Cubs have confirmed they will send 26-year-old right handed pitcher Chris Carpenter to the Boston Red Sox as compensation for Theo Epstein. The deal also includes an exchange of players to be named later, which is expected to be decided by April 15. The Cubs selected the 6’4” Carpenter in the third round of the 2008 amateur draft, and since then he has posted a 21-19 record with a 3.62 ERA and 7.62 SO/9 in 96 games across the minor league system.

Baseball America ranked Carpenter as the No. 13 prospect in the Cubs’ system, while John Sickels of SB Nation’s Minor League Ball blog ranked the 26 year old pitching prospect as the No. 14 overall player in the Cubs’ system, and had this to say:

  14) Chris Carpenter, RHP, Grade C+: Power arm pitched poorly in Triple-A bullpen due to command issues but looked much better in Arizona Fall League. Dominant when his command is working.

This better not turn out into another of those Brock for Broglio kinda things.

Worst Chris Carpenter ever.

Its not good when the "prospect" you acquired is only 12 years younger than the GM he was acquired for.

The SOSH boards eagerly await Castro and Lackey being named as the PsTBNL

Happy the Sox got non-zero compensation.

I think it's pretty funny that Theo and Lucchino managed to draw out a negotiation for a C-prospect into its fourth month. That goes well beyond defending your interests and solidly into neurosis.

A guy who can throw his fastball in the triple digits is solid compensation, I think. Hopefully the Red Sox can make him into the next Daniel Bard.

26 years old, and terrible in AAA.

Awesome. Can we just skip this season?

I wonder if his Twitter feed is "ntr Chris Carpenter".

Different management, so I don't know if it had any impact, but Carpenter pouted on Twitter after not being a part of the Cubs' September call-ups. I didn't care about it, but it seems the type of thing that could piss off a management group.

Headline should just have been "Chris Carpenter to the Red Sox" for no other reason than to panic Cards fans and raise then crush the hopes of Red Sox fans.

Can Gammons chime in to say Carpenter doesn't crack the Red Sox top 50 prospects?

Based on Cherington's offseason, this would likely spur hope in most Cardinal fans, as we've been looking for a decent 2B for a while now.

Based on the headline, I thought this was an article from the Onion. I had no idea that there was ANOTHER Chris Carpenter.
   16. John Northey Posted: February 21, 2012 at 03:06 PM (#4065601)
Cris Carpenter was also around years ago (88 to 96) - 71 ERA+ over 414 IP, mostly with St Louis (of all teams) and mostly in the pen. I remember doing the odd double take reading something that mentioned him and going 'what? When did the Jays trade him'.

Hopefully this Chris Carpenter can get time in the majors just to re-create that confusion.
   17. Brian C Posted: February 21, 2012 at 03:36 PM (#4065629)
This actually seems pretty much fair. Carpenter has some potential but isn't a great prospect. That seems "significant", but also between the Cubs' somewhat unreasonable offer of some nobody minor leaguer and the Sox' unreasonable demand for a top-of-the-line guy.

It's amusing to me that the ordeal is still ongoing, though, with the PTBNLs yet to be decided. The Cubs' Facebook page calls the matter closed but of course that's not true.

Too bad we won't have this guy and Wakefield on the same team.
   20. zfan Posted: February 21, 2012 at 05:05 PM (#4065716)
Rumor is the only reason for the PTBNL's is that the deal had to be structured as a trade with players (not just execs) going both directions. The PTBNL's are just bookkeeping, will probably be a swap of 23-year-old, .180-hitting catchers in single-A.
   21. zonk Posted: February 21, 2012 at 05:16 PM (#4065727)
I guess this is fair... Carpenter was always a poor man's Andrew Cashner in my mind.

Interested in seeing what the PTBNL 'swap' ends up being -- the report I had heard on the radio made it sound like the Cubs would be sending another player to Sox, rather than swapping anything.

To be honest... I'm not entirely certain I'd be opposed to something like a straight up Soriano/Crawford swap. I wonder what Red Sox nation would think of something like that...

I'd vote "nay." I still think Crawford will be productive. Maybe not 5 wins but productive and helpful to a contender.

Why not just make it Daisuke Matsuzaka to Chicago, along with his entire salary, then? It would actually do Boston a bit of a favor, since it would save them luxury tax, and the Cubs could just release him or put him on the 60 day DL.
   24. Dan Posted: February 21, 2012 at 06:52 PM (#4065777)
Why would the Red Sox give a fully paid Daisuke to Chicago for nothing? He'll be back in June or July with a healthy elbow, ready to serve as a 5th starter.
   25. Darren Posted: February 21, 2012 at 09:49 PM (#4065851)
which is expected to be decided by April 15.

That's the best part, really, that they drew this all out for months and months, while a completely useless commissioner made idle threats, and finally after 4 months, they can't even settle it then. I mean, are you kidding? Is the point to look like you're wasting as much time as possible on this? Really?

Really Theo Epstein? Really? You move to a new organization and instead of putting the past behind you quickly, you spend 4 months arguing that you're not worth more than the #14 prospect in an average system? Really?

Really Larry Lucchino? You negotiate the departure of GM without determining the compensation first because, heck, you've always had great success working out the details of trades in the past? Really?

Really, Darren? You're parroting a lame SNL gag and not even doing it that well? That's the best you've got? Really?
   26. cercopithecus aethiops Posted: February 21, 2012 at 10:38 PM (#4065865)
[23] If the Red Sox pay his salary, then it counts against their tax threshold. So that trade wouldn't save them anything.
   27. Tripon Posted: February 21, 2012 at 10:53 PM (#4065870)
The Red Sox already saved 3 million by the Cubs promising to pay the bonus of Theo's original contract with the Red Sox.

   28. Social media assassin (Templeusox) Posted: February 22, 2012 at 01:04 AM (#4065910)
They got someone from the Cubs 40-man roster. Today was the first day teams could place players on the 60-man roster to free up a 40-man spot. They placed Bobby Jenks on the 60-man today. Seems like a pretty logical reason why the trade happened today.

Worse, it's another Christopher JOHN Carpenter. We can't even use the middle name to clarify.

#15 My first reaction was, geez that's a lot. My second was, when did they sign Carpenter?

It simply didn't dawn on me that there was an actual Chris Carpenter in the Cubs organization. Baseball players should be required to take a stage name to avoid this confusion.

I remember the Seattle comment in one of the Abstracts was about how the Mariners were trying to round up all of the Hendersons and then trade the guys who just had the right name but no actual talent.

Ah, I remember the good old days of Brian R. Hunter and Bobby M. Jones, when the second-cut players had the decency to give us a middle initial for our troubles.
   32. Ron J Posted: February 22, 2012 at 09:49 AM (#4065972)
#31 At least the Hunter gave us distinguishing nicknames. Everybody knew who you were talking about with "Big Game" and "Little Game"

And at least the Bobby Jones were "white, right-handed Bobby Jones" and "black, left-handed Bobby Jones." I guess we can call these guys "good Chris Carpenter" and "crappy Chris Carpenter."
   34. Dan Posted: February 22, 2012 at 10:40 AM (#4065988)
Ervin Santana had the decency to change his name instead of confusing us with 2 Johan Santanas in the majors.

Starter Chris Carpenter and reliever Chris Carpenter should work fine.

We could wait a few months and go with "Chris Carpenter" and "that guy who sells me the lottery scratchers at 7-11."

Also, post 5 made me snicker.
