And you were a…compensation.
The Chicago Cubs have confirmed they will send 26-year-old right handed pitcher Chris Carpenter to the Boston Red Sox as compensation for Theo Epstein. The deal also includes an exchange of players to be named later, which is expected to be decided by April 15. The Cubs selected the 6’4” Carpenter in the third round of the 2008 amateur draft, and since then he has posted a 21-19 record with a 3.62 ERA and 7.62 SO/9 in 96 games across the minor league system.
Baseball America ranked Carpenter as the No. 13 prospect in the Cubs’ system, while John Sickels of SB Nation’s Minor League Ball blog ranked the 26 year old pitching prospect as the No. 14 overall player in the Cubs’ system, and had this to say:
14) Chris Carpenter, RHP, Grade C+: Power arm pitched poorly in Triple-A bullpen due to command issues but looked much better in Arizona Fall League. Dominant when his command is working.

1. Walt Davis Posted: February 21, 2012 at 02:08 PM (#4065543)I think it's pretty funny that Theo and Lucchino managed to draw out a negotiation for a C-prospect into its fourth month. That goes well beyond defending your interests and solidly into neurosis.
Awesome. Can we just skip this season?
I hope its Harry Chiti for himself.
Based on Cherington's offseason, this would likely spur hope in most Cardinal fans, as we've been looking for a decent 2B for a while now.
Hopefully this Chris Carpenter can get time in the majors just to re-create that confusion.
It's amusing to me that the ordeal is still ongoing, though, with the PTBNLs yet to be decided. The Cubs' Facebook page calls the matter closed but of course that's not true.
Interested in seeing what the PTBNL 'swap' ends up being -- the report I had heard on the radio made it sound like the Cubs would be sending another player to Sox, rather than swapping anything.
To be honest... I'm not entirely certain I'd be opposed to something like a straight up Soriano/Crawford swap. I wonder what Red Sox nation would think of something like that...
I'd vote "nay." I still think Crawford will be productive. Maybe not 5 wins but productive and helpful to a contender.
Why not just make it Daisuke Matsuzaka to Chicago, along with his entire salary, then? It would actually do Boston a bit of a favor, since it would save them luxury tax, and the Cubs could just release him or put him on the 60 day DL.
That's the best part, really, that they drew this all out for months and months, while a completely useless commissioner made idle threats, and finally after 4 months, they can't even settle it then. I mean, are you kidding? Is the point to look like you're wasting as much time as possible on this? Really?
Really Theo Epstein? Really? You move to a new organization and instead of putting the past behind you quickly, you spend 4 months arguing that you're not worth more than the #14 prospect in an average system? Really?
Really Larry Lucchino? You negotiate the departure of GM without determining the compensation first because, heck, you've always had great success working out the details of trades in the past? Really?
Really, Darren? You're parroting a lame SNL gag and not even doing it that well? That's the best you've got? Really?
Worse, it's another Christopher JOHN Carpenter. We can't even use the middle name to clarify.
It simply didn't dawn on me that there was an actual Chris Carpenter in the Cubs organization. Baseball players should be required to take a stage name to avoid this confusion.
I remember the Seattle comment in one of the Abstracts was about how the Mariners were trying to round up all of the Hendersons and then trade the guys who just had the right name but no actual talent.
Ah, I remember the good old days of Brian R. Hunter and Bobby M. Jones, when the second-cut players had the decency to give us a middle initial for our troubles.
We could wait a few months and go with "Chris Carpenter" and "that guy who sells me the lottery scratchers at 7-11."
What makes you think the Cardinals are going to cut Chris Carpenter?
Just like Michael Keaton (born Michael Douglas!)
And actor Stewart Granger (born James Stewart).
I am pretty sure he was born 'Bruce Wayne'.
Also, post 5 made me snicker.
