Theo Epstein Officially Resgns

Dear Mr. Woodman,

Theo Epstein has resigned from the Red Sox in order to become the new President of Baseball Operations for the Cubs. The clubs also have reached an agreement regarding a process by which appropriate compensation will be determined for the Red Sox and that issue will be resolved in the near term.

Signed,

Epstein’s Mom (and a joint press release from the Sox and Cubs)

Again I will point to the desktop wallpaper I will be using for a solid year. If I could get this blown up into a nice poster, I'd do so in a heartbeat.

I've actually been using a picture my father took at Spring Training in 2003 of Theo and Grady Little at the minor league camp in Ft. Myers.

As a Cardinals fan, I look forward to seeing how the Cubs and Theo screw up going forward. It's just the way the world works.

I'm using it as well now - love it.

All the best to Theo and friends at the Cubs.

Never saw him resign.

I just wanna know if that really was Epstein in that Lakeview Starbucks.
At the Tuesday press conference, I predict the following sequence.

REPORTER: Was that really you at the Lakeview Starbucks?

EPSTEIN: No, but I get that a lot.

(pause)

EPSTEIN: What's Starbucks?

Impossible! People here told me the mere fact that the Red Sox were negotiating over the terms of his departure was going to end civilization!

Why. The Cubs being the Cubs, Theo knows he can phone it in now.

Dammit!!!

Well, I for one am sad to see him go. He had the damnedest time putting together a bullpen, but he was the face of the franchise during its most successful era in nearly 100 years. It'll be hard to adjust mentally to a team with no Tito in the dugout and no Theo in the stands. I have no doubt that the Sox will continue to win a lot, but still . . . I remember the visceral sense of excitement when they hired him. Some Ivy League kid, given charge of one of the biggest and most expensive franchises in the game. I remember thinking that it was either a stroke of genius or the act of a madman. More the former than the latter.

It will be interesting to see if the culture of the Cubs is changed by having him in charge. With the Mets and Dodgers in dire straits, I wouldn't be surprised if the Cubs and their payroll became a dominant force in the NL over the next few years. Actually, maybe that's just wishful thinking, as the Cardinals have come to annoy me so much, but a man can dream . . . he can dream that his imaginary enemies will be crushed by a collection of wealthy strangers.

From the Twitter:

@LynchieWCVB reports Cubs prez Crane Kenney was holding up Theo talks 'for his own interest and is in hot water with Commish

Kenney seems like a pretty reasonable source for all the press leaks and stuff.
