Theo Epstein to return for Hot Stove Cool Music benefit show in Allston Saturday

Just so he can play with The Remains!

Theo Epstein, the former Red Sox general manager, will return home this weekend to help host the semi-annual “Hot Stove Cool Music” charity concert that launched 12 years ago.

Legendary baseball journalist Peter Gammons and a slew of musical performers will join Epstein, a Brookline native, at the Paradise Rock Club in Allston for Saturday night’s fundraiser – three months after he resigned as general manager of the Red Sox to lead baseball operations for the Chicago Cubs.

...Boston-native actor Mike O’Malley, who plays a regular role on the TV series “Glee” will emcee the gathering that includes scheduled performers: Grammy award-nominated, Boston-native Susan Tedeschi, Boston rockers The Remains, Grammy award-winning guitarist Derek Trucks, indie folk band Deer Tick, indie rockers Mean Creek, garage punk band The Sprained Ankles and the “Hot Stove All-Stars” featuring Gammons, Buffalo Tom’s Bill Janovitz, indie rocker Kay Hanley, J. Geils Band’s Seth Justman, folk rocker Robin Lane, Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Tanya Donelly and more, organizers said.

I wish you had posted the version of "Why Do I Cry" from "A Session with the Remains"---this one's nice, but the "Session" one blows the doors off it....

Anyone ever gone to one of these things?

Went to the first one and then went again last year. It's an awful lot of fun. They keep it moving along pretty well with auctions and stuff between sets. The music is OK though I'd personally have preferred a bit more in the line of full bands rather than the amount of "all star" band type of stuff. That may have been a function of seeing Kay Hanley on stage and not hearing any Letters To Cleo stuff. Bronson Arroyo could have a pretty good career in a cover band though, he was surprisingly good. Mike O'Malley seemed a bit more impressed with himself than I thought he should have been but other than that everyone was great.

Oh, and Heidi Watney in person is even more spectacular.

Susan Tedeschi is only Grammy award-nominated? I thought she'd won like five of the things.

...Apparently she's been nominated in six separate years, but never won. Injustice!

Pearl Jam sucks.

Lost Best New Artist to Christina Aguilera. (Other contenders that year were Macy Gray, Britney Spears, and Kid Rock... So it could've been worse.)

Lost Best Female Rock Vocal to Sheryl Crow.

Lost Best Contemporary Blues Album to Etta James, then Delbert McClinton, then Derek Trucks.

She's been nominated (with Trucks) this year for Best Blues Album, and hasn't lost yet! (But she's up against 3-time-winner Keb' Mo'.)

Word. But where were you in the music (Bill James mailbag) thread?

I would check the thread to see if you were there, but I have no bookmarks and so I am lost. I miss bookmarks. I miss them so much. I think I am going to go and have a nice little cry.

Susan Tedeschi's version of John Prine's "Angel of Montgomery" is wonderful.
