HOW WILL THE ANGELS WIN TODAY?!

Albert Pujols just got thrown out at first base on a ground ball into left-center by the second baseman. That was painful, because you knew he would be.

No shift? That would be a bit embarrassing.

OOF. Tropeano set down the first 11 batters of the game, then walk, walk, HBP, and triple. Talk about your meltdowns. Ugh.

First inning of Pads-Rox today, 6 outs, 6 strikeouts.

First inning of Pads-Rox today, 6 outs, 6 strikeouts.

The Rockies have now made it all the way through the lineup without being retired on a ball in play. They have four singles and five strikeouts.

This has got to be the worst lineup I have ever seen. Is Hosmer hurt
   10. Tom Nawrocki Posted: April 25, 2018 at 04:12 PM (#5660298)
Hosmer's on the family medical leave list, or something like that.
   11. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: April 25, 2018 at 04:15 PM (#5660300)
Except for a flare single to center, Verlander's been perfect against the Angels today. Seems like the trade to get him is working out juuuuuust fine for Houston.
   12. Tom Nawrocki Posted: April 25, 2018 at 04:15 PM (#5660301)
David Dahl extends his hitting streak, which dates back to 2016, with a two-run triple. He also now leads the team in triples, despite the fact that he's only playing in his fourth game of the season.
   13. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: April 25, 2018 at 04:19 PM (#5660307)
... Pujols does get Verlander, though. Breaks up the shutout with a line drive homer.

And the dream of having all 5 first rounders in the starting lineup remains elusive.

Holy cow. I just read the Yanks-Twins preview and next to Sonny Gray it said 8.27 ERA. What a shocking revelation.
I must have missed some games of his. I kind of thought this would be an easy win tonight, especially vs. Lance Lynn.
I guess not. Damn, but GO Yankees !!!

Cold and rainy for the A’s in Arlington: 53 degrees but should actually warm up slightly later after a front moves through. They’ll get the game in. I’ll just complain and wish we had a domed stadium :)

Matt Harvey laughed audibly when approached by reporters today seeking comment about his bullpen debut. "No chance. Zero chance," he said.

Harvey was asked why. "I have nothing to say to you guys," he said.

He was asked why not. "I dont [expletive] want to," Harvey replied.

It’s Autograph Wednesday. Usually the lines for autographs are very long, and I don’t collect them, so I pass by. But tonight it’s so cold & wet that there’s nobody to ask for autographs. So I went up to a couple of the guys who looked bereft and got them to sign the book I’m reading for class. Is that a baseball book, somebody asked. No, I said, a random book. They seemed appreciative.

The day before the move was officially announced, he just answered reporters' questions by repeating "I'm a starting pitcher" over and over. Handling it like a mature professional, he is.

Len and JD talking about the 1899 Cleveland Spiders. yeah, they were historically bad, and yes I know the story why. but looking at their BBREF page, it's cool to see how consistently horrible they were.

Every batter with more than 150 PA had between 56 and 93 OPS+. Every pitcher with 9 or more starts had between 45 and 68 ERA+. Only 2 players had an OPS+ above 100, and both were traded early in the season. One pitcher had an ERA+ of 96 in 37 IP. Another did not allow and ER in 3.2 IP. All the rest were between 30 and 68. they finished 45 games out...of 11th place.
   56. perros Posted: April 25, 2018 at 08:36 PM (#5660524)
Arrieta escaped trouble in the fourth after an error and a couple of walks loaded the bases with no outs. He'lm be more than fine going forward this season if he remembers he doesn't need to be a strikeout pitcher to be successful.
   57. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: April 25, 2018 at 08:36 PM (#5660525)
More fun stuff the the Spiders:

After a win on Aug 25, they were a positively putrid 19-94. They went 1-40 the rest of the way. Their longest winning streak was 2 games, which they accomplished once. They allowed over 700 more runs than they scored. they allowed nearly a run an inning (1252 R/1264 IP)
   58. BDC Posted: April 25, 2018 at 08:38 PM (#5660528)

Yes. They also played 85 of their last 92 games on the road. Their attendance on the season was, and I am not making this up, 6088. Granted, they played only 42 games at home, but that's an average of 145/game. 145! The previous year they drew 70,496, and the year before that, 115,000.

"Traded" isn't really the right word. The same people owned both the Spiders and the St. Louis club, so they transferred all the good players, like Lave Cross and Ossee Schreckengost, to St. Louis. Nothing came back to Cleveland in return.

I love ####### idiot fans and writers.... Ben Hochman, which is one of the dumbest people who has a job writing, wrote a hatched job because Matheny allowed the Cardinals to pitch to Cespedes(or "didn't at least have anyone warming up.")

I get the Matheny hate, people are stupid and jealous that he has a job they want, is better looking than them, and a better person than them, so hatred is natural.... but seriously, how in the f- can you argue with the events of yesterday?

Let's set the stage... It's the top of the fifth inning.... Cardinals are leading 4-1 going into the inning.... Going into the 4th inning, Weaver has walked 3, allowed one hit, has roughly 75 pitches and 4 strikeouts.... Facing the 7, 8, 9th hitter... 5 pitches later he has two outs... then walks the next guy on 4 straight pitches.... then walks the next guy on four straight pitches, and then ends up going 3-1 to Cespedes who hits a game tying homerun.

Cardinal fans are having a conniption fit, because Matheny is a horrible manager and never should have allowed Weaver to face Cespedes..... And I'm trying to think of a time where you would reasonably had a pitcher warming up to face Cespedes(and I'm having another fan telling me, that they should have just walked Cespedes)

Greinke makes Hoskins look bad with the curve, then hangs a slider to Aaron Altherr he blasts out to center for an Earl Weaver special.

This team can hit.

Buster Olney, @Buster_ESPN

Didi Gregorius HR/strikeouts in his career:
2013: 7/65
2014: 6/52
2015: 9/85
2016: 20/82
2017: 25/87
2018: 9/9

His walks are way up so far this season, too.

damnit, got into an argument on facebook about Matheny and didn't get a chance to enjoy that inning by the Cardinals... ugh... I love talking baseball, and it's a passion, but it shouldn't prevent me from enjoying the actual game... but man when people are putting out arguments that are demonstrably false it's hard to ignore. (in this case I mentioned that I don't like set line ups, and his argument was that I would be the only manager in baseball that had that belief....well me and Matheny which is what he was bagging on....and I'm like there is no set lineups in baseball anymore, especially in the NL.... every team in the NL with over a .500 record last year used a minimum of 111 different lineups(not including pitchers) set lineups is a myth in todays game. )

Not sure what the f that was about, as the Cardinal announcers didn't seem to believe the excuse either. You could almost see them putting their fingers up with air quotes as they made the statement.

I was thinking maybe he'd gone to the cage to take some swings and there was a mishap of some kind. (That or a clubhouse fistfight, take your choice.)

Austin now hitting .298/.375/.649, 1.024 OPS. Might be difficult for Greg Bird to displace him, assuming Bird ever regains his health for an extended period.

EDIT: Austin doubles through the fog, apparently off the CF wall. Might have gone out, can't really see much out there.

Damn... I used Beautiful a bit too often there....

Still man on first and third, pitcher up to bat, one out, and Wacha drops a bunt right in front of him, with Dejong running on the pitch, play at the plate was both late and muffed by the catcher, and Wong who was on first manages to make it to third....

Nice AB from Didi.

Would be a nice time for Stanton to come through ...

Neris finally rears back and throws his fastball, last one falls in Odubel Herrera's glove on the track.

Can’t say the OAK-TEX game is very eventful, but it’s not bad - Rangers lead 3-2 in the sixth. Bullpen implosion may be due later but for now I will enjoy things.

29 teams not named the Mets are 20-255 when trailing after 7 IP
Mets are....................................4-4

From the Cardinal announcers, the Mets have the most come from behind victories in baseball, while the Cardinals are tied for second.... so maybe this game might bounce around a bit at the end.

Another great defensive play by Wong.... he has just been solid + as heck. Coincidentally the hitting has also returned as his defense has blossomed.
