oooh, "in play-runs"

What the heck is happening in this Cards/Sox game? Matheny ejected?

B|tching about the late time out call after Brebbia held the ball for a bazillion years.

Cardinals are now 0-7 against the Sox and Yanks. Nice show, Cardinals bullpen.
   105. Meatwad in mourning Posted: August 16, 2017 at 10:49 PM (#5514994)
walk off for boston, let's hope the cubs pen doesn't blow this.
   106. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 16, 2017 at 10:50 PM (#5514996)
Red Sox win it, wow. That's got to sting for St. Louis. Never really thought they'd get there.
   107. salvomania Posted: August 16, 2017 at 10:50 PM (#5514997)
what a choke

Walk two batters in the 9th and give up three runs in the ninth to blow a 4-2 lead. Christ.

A bazillion years is an understatement. AFAIC there should be an automatic ball called on a world class stall move like that.

What the heck is happening in this Cards/Sox game? Matheny ejected? why? the gameday is slow to refresh..

Molina took issue with time being granted late, Matheny came out to keep him from getting run, then really laid into the umpire for a good long while. The ambient mics were picking it up, but I was simultaneously watching something else and couldn't make out the words.
   110. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 16, 2017 at 10:51 PM (#5515000)
I meant to say I never really thought the Red Sox would get there and pull it off. Was surprised they brought in Kimbrel in the 9th? Maybe he needed the work?
   111. Jose is an Absurd Doubles Machine Posted: August 16, 2017 at 10:55 PM (#5515003)
Yeah Kimbrel hasn't pitched much lately and with the day off tomorrow a little work was the right call.

Matheny had been frustrated with the home plate ump all night and not without reason. He got his money's worth, he let the ump have it. That was a, not the full Weaver but a Piniella level effort.
   112. Randomly Fluctuating Defensive Metric Posted: August 16, 2017 at 10:55 PM (#5515004)
You know how some managers are given credit for projecting calmness toward their team? Matheny reminds me of Michael Douglas in Falling Down.
   113. Jose is an Absurd Doubles Machine Posted: August 16, 2017 at 10:57 PM (#5515007)
That was my thought too. I thought the kid did a hell of a job staying composed.
   114. Randomly Fluctuating Defensive Metric Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:01 PM (#5515009)
I've thought it before and we just saw it play out again. Mookie is a bastard in those clutch moments. He doesn't strike-out often, has above average plate discipline, and often makes hard contact. As a Yankees fan, there's no one on the Red Sox you'd rather see up less with the game on the line. He reminds me of Sheffield. Not as much power, but similar profile.
   115. Bote Man Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:05 PM (#5515015)

A full Earl Weaver is a religious experience.
   116. Jose is an Absurd Doubles Machine Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:06 PM (#5515017)
114 - Paul ONeill is the Yankee with a similar profile. Matsui too. Hate those guys in big spots. Mookie was absolutely the guy I wanted there.
   117. Bote Man Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:07 PM (#5515018)
let's hope the cubs pen doesn't blow this.

You were saying??

Also, how is there a Cubs game on and no Spahn nor Elroy here in the OMNICHATTER??
   118. Brian C Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:07 PM (#5515019)
Epic bullpen meltdown in Wrigley, too. Guess it's a thing in the division tonight.
   119. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:10 PM (#5515020)
I saw it was 5-1 earlier in the fourth and thought, "Should be OK, even with Lackey on the mound."

But I forgot the bullpen is trash now.
   120. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:11 PM (#5515021)
Seriously, what happened to Rondon? I know relievers are a fickle bunch, sometimes from season to season, but his complete unraveling in the last 12 months has been something to behold.
   121. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:11 PM (#5515022)
I'm here, just not posting much.
   122. Meatwad in mourning Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:13 PM (#5515024)
How often does a team lose after leadibg 4-0 after the first inning
   123. cardsfanboy Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:13 PM (#5515025)
I'm sure someone is going to find a way to blame Matheny for this loss,

just an ugly result, nothing wrong done by management here.
   124. Brian C Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:14 PM (#5515026)
Well, this game was actually 4-1 after the first, meatwad. Point probably stands though.

I'm fairly certain that this is the second time it's happened for the Cardinals this year....at least.
   126. Meatwad in mourning Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:18 PM (#5515028)
Oh yeah i forgot that part. I try to black out lackey starts
   127. The Yankee Clapper Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:21 PM (#5515029)
If you ever said to yourself "what would it look like if someone threw a first pitch that missed the catcher and hit a cameraman in the nuts" check out the first pitch at the Red Sox/Cardinals game.

Top story on SportsCenter, even. Entertaining, if they aren't your nuts, but I fear this will lead to an epidemic of folks trying to obtain their 15 minutes of fame by nailing some poor inattentive slob standing too close to the action. Be careful who you select for the 1st pitch honors!
   128. Bote Man Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:32 PM (#5515032)

Why, you are correct, sir!
   129. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:33 PM (#5515035)
Gameday makes it look like that second missed bunt attempt was behind Zobrist's knee.
   130. Meatwad in mourning Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:33 PM (#5515036)
I was way wrong. Shoulda been a hbp. Edited post
   131. BDC Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:34 PM (#5515037)
Joey Gallo lofts one into the RCF bullpen to make it 11-4 Texas. Glad I hung around to see that one.
   132. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:35 PM (#5515038)
In addition to bullpen meltdowns, manager meltdowns seem to be a very NL Central thing tonight, too.
   133. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:36 PM (#5515039)
Zobrist was hit. Ump said it was a bunt attempt, but it clearly wasn't, he was jumping out of the way. Awful.
   134. Brian C Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:36 PM (#5515040)
Joe will get suspended for that one. He definitely bumped one of the umps with his fist and made contact with the other, actually moving him out of the way so he could yell at the other guy more. Probably what, 5 games at least?
   135. Bote Man Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:38 PM (#5515041)
Zobrist was hit. Ump said it was a bunt attempt, but it clearly wasn't, he was jumping out of the way.

I'm guessing it was not called a HBP because he did not draw the bat back from squaring to bunt, but he really was dodging the pitch at the time he would've pulled back the bat so I don't think the call is very good. I think Joe had an argument.
   136. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:40 PM (#5515042)
The ump should get suspended for that call.
   137. Bote Man Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:40 PM (#5515043)
How many pitchers are named Wood this year???
   138. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:41 PM (#5515044)
Let's see about this Bryant clutch thing...
   139. Meatwad in mourning Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:41 PM (#5515045)
Its up to bryant to avoid extras
   140. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:41 PM (#5515046)
Pathetic at-bat by Almora.
   141. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:41 PM (#5515047)
Well, now's a good time to regain your clutchiness, Bryant.
   142. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:41 PM (#5515048)
Or that.
   143. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:41 PM (#5515049)
Ha
   144. Meatwad in mourning Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:42 PM (#5515050)
Also a horrid at bat from almora. Looked like last nights ab's
   145. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:42 PM (#5515051)
Yeah, Joe will be suspended.
   146. Meatwad in mourning Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:43 PM (#5515053)
Well thats one way to win.
   147. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:43 PM (#5515054)
Following on gameday, I thought, "How does the catcher stop THAT pitch?"

I guess the answer is: He doesn't.

Bryant is so clutch!
   148. Bote Man Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:43 PM (#5515056)
Wood was pitching everything to the 1B side of the plate, so it was only a matter of time before it was too wide to catch.
   149. Bote Man Posted: August 16, 2017 at 11:47 PM (#5515058)
In my younger days I might have tuned in to another game. Here are my choices:

DET 4, TEX 12
ATL 2, COL 17(!!!)
CWS 3, LAD 2

The first 2 are non-competitive and I just can't listen to the announcers on either of the teams for the third game. I'm a terrible baseball fan.

Also, GAWD I miss Vin Scully!
   150. BDC Posted: August 17, 2017 at 12:03 AM (#5515065)
I got a foul ball! With 2 out in the 9th inning of a 12-6 game. First in 53 years of ballgames.
   151. Meatwad in mourning Posted: August 17, 2017 at 12:04 AM (#5515066)
Outstanding BDC! How many kids did you have to fight off for it?

I don't have a problem with Hershiser, but Joe Davis is at least a 6 on the Vasgersian Scale of Annoyance. Whose ####### nephew is he? Because he obviously didn't get a bunch of high-profile broadcast gigs in his 20s based on merit. And the Dodgers, like the Yankees, have no excuse for not doing better.
   153. BDC Posted: August 17, 2017 at 12:31 AM (#5515071)
I always told myself, if I get a ball, I'll give it to a kid ... but at that point there were no kids & few adults any longer in attendance :(
   154. Lance Reddick! Lance him! Posted: August 17, 2017 at 01:16 AM (#5515076)
I just started laughing uncontrollably when the ball left Puig's bat. Of course the Dodgers rallied in the ninth. Who would expect anything different, ever?
