Third Inductee to the Alternate Universe Baseball Hall of Fame—Eric Davis

To many people, Eric Davis was the best player that they ever saw. Davis was, in many ways, the second coming of Willie Mays. He could do it all. He averaged 28 HR and 35 SB for every 162 games played. He had a career OPS+ of 125. He was one of the best defensive players at the second-toughest position. He had so-called “young player” skills that would age gracefully. At his peak he averaged 30 HR and 40 SB a season.

Somewhere, my buddy and I have 250 Eric Davis rookie cards in mint condition that were going to pay for a house when he made the Hall of Fame. We bought them in 1986. In 1990, Eric Davis' injury ended the dreams of him in the HOF. Since then, the trading card market has completely fallen apart.

Other than that, it was a great plan.
