This is how Verlander got his groove back

“I was 99 percent sure I was going to need shoulder surgery. I couldn’t throw a baseball.”

By now, you probably know two things: Verlander didn’t need shoulder surgery, and he’s currently enjoying the most dominant season of a probable Hall of Fame career. After Monday’s emphatic 5-1 win over the Yankees, he leads the Majors with a 1.11 ERA. Verlander is pitching for the defending World Series champion Astros in a rotation that could become the best of all time.

Perhaps most tellingly, the 35-year-old Verlander is speaking candidly about a prospect that seemed so remote that night in Pittsburgh four years ago.

He wants to pitch in the Majors for another decade.

"In my head, right now, I'm thinking 45," Verlander replied, when asked about the age at which he'd like to retire.

Shouldn't be a problem if Bartolo Colon can do it.

Verlander isn't in the quality physical condition that Bartolo is in.

In my head, right now, I'm thinking 45,

Well of course, he must continue to work. It's not like he's got anything interesting at home to spend time on...

If this article doesn’t involve Dr. Mike Marshall I’m not interested.

You mean "quantity" not "quality".

Quantity has a quality all its own.

6 simple tricks the Astros taugh Verlander to revive his career:

Pitch calmly
Inside fastballs
Never groove one
Every pitch counts

Take what the batter gives you
Away, away, away!
Relax

Fun with sample size-In 2011 in 11 starts from end of May to July he had a 1.15 ERA and went 9-2. In 13 starts he had a 1.32 and was 11-2. He also pitched a little over an inning longer per start back then as well.

Interestingly, Bill James commented 20 years ago that, for righthanded pitchers with a huge fastball, it’s not uncommon for them to have a 1-2 year career crisis in their early 30s, when they lose a couple MPH off their fastball and have to learn how to get hitters out without being able to consistently blow them away, but then return to or near their former level for a few more years once they figure it out.

Verlander would seem to fit that profile. Now that we have the data, I wonder if his velocity in fact noticeably dropped about the time he started struggling?
