This idea that someone is going to be amazingly talented and just fail in NY because of the city is silly. "Ed Whitson!" some moron at my job said yesterday (everyone at my job has the dumbest Mike-Francesa-caller-takes on every topic). What happens sometimes is that people struggle for normal baseball reasons and then if they never get good it gets worse. But do some playoff jazz and it'll be all good. People still cheer for scrubs from the 90s.

Yeah, some folks have flopped, and not everyone likes NY. But if you hate it that much, be like Mussina and just do your job and it'll go fine.

I’m with Blastin. For the money these guys are making, you can insulate yourself from 90% of New York’s New York-iness. Get yourself a house in Westchester, Fairfield or Bergen County, commute in, pretend you’re in Atlanta.

Well, yes and no. A high percentage of the NY pressure these guys feel must be inescapable. It's in the clubhouse, the media engagements you're required to do. You hear it from fans on the field. And it's not easy to live in a cocoon. There are still brutish Yankees fans in the wealthy suburbs.

To be sure, it's not something I'd worry about. But there probably are players that feel a particular pressure in NY and it's probably not so easy to escape it.

Some players feel absolutely zero NYC pressure but may feel the pressure of being on a team with big expectations. Or of living up to a big contract. Who knows. Most players are probably entirely unaffected by any of this.
