Thomason: Braves Journal: I wish I had good news.

For those of you who’ve been around for a while, you probably know Mac Thomason. He’s been blogging at Braves Journal since at least 1998.  Braves Journal is certainly the oldest Braves blog still in operation, and it’s one of the oldest of all baseball blogs. He’s been battling cancer for a while, and things have just gotten worse.

We’re not giving up. We are, if we can, going to talk to the doctor in Indianapolis with whom I talked last year, and see if he has any ideas. There is a protocol in trials in Philadelphia which looks promising and applicable to my case. And dammit, a lot of people (including a great-uncle of mine) have lived for a long time with cancer hanging over them. Maybe it’s just the drugs talking, but I don’t expect to go any time soon. I fully expect to celebrate when the Braves lift the 2012 World Series trophy over their heads.

Send a little love Mac’s way, will ya!

Edit: Mac has been a Primate for a very, very long time. I haven’t seen him post for quite a while but if he still pops in I hope he knows we very much appreciate his contributions and wish him the best of luck in this battle. Jim

Damn. When I saw the headline I thought the bad news was going to be about the Braves cutting payroll for next season or a prospect wasn't working out.

#### news, man. #### news.

I remember reading years ago that Mac was sick but he was such a young guy I assumed he would quickly get past it. This is just so sad. Mac was my introduction to the Braves blog world and I spent many hours reading and commenting on his blogs back when I had more time to waste on such things. I got to know (and later meet) both Alex R's from the comments to his blog, and enjoyed ranting / discussing music / celebrating with countless others (Stu, Smitty, Colin, sansho, spike, flournoy, ububba, Rob Cope, etc etc). Though I haven't visited much lately, Braves Journal always feels like home.

Keep fighting Mac. You're in our thoughts and prayers.

My role at Mac's place these days is mostly to piss off the regulars by asking questions they don't like (in my own, pitch-perfect manner of asking people questions.) Mac has tolerated me kindly. Like I said, #### news.

Mac at his best with The Road to Bristol (http://bit.ly/qMeWn0)

Our task is simple: to determine, via a time-tested method (the 64-team elimination tournament as seen in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, which ESPN used to show in its pre-sucking days) which ESPN broadcasting personality is the most totally loathsome and most deserves to suffer permanent paralysis of the vocal cords.

I still can't believe Skip Bayless didn't win that tournament. Stuart Scott just brings out the worst in some people.

Geez. I'm sorry to read this. Like others, I thought Mac had just drifted away from BBTF. Mac, if you're reading this, good luck. I've really enjoyed your writing over the years and look forward to a lot more.

But, as for the 2012 championship trophy? Definitely the drugs.

Hang in there.

I lurk. Thanks for the kind words, and thoughts, everybody.

So sorry to read that. Best of luck Mac.

One of Mac's friends has set up a facebook page here for those who use it.

I've been visiting Braves Journal since the late 90s. Always loved Mac's sense of humor and general annoyance. I hope there's some way he can pull through this.

I didn't know of Mac prior to reading this, but: best of luck.

Good luck Mac. I've enjoyed your blog for years. Not a Braves fan but the team blogs are good places to read about prospects and the Braves always seem loaded in that department. As for the 2012 trophy? Here's hoping you get to see old vet Jason Heyward hoist his first over his head in 2025.

Mac, I wish you best of luck with this fight.

2012 World Series Champion Braves sounds right to me. Fingers crossed for good results on all fronts. -Mike A(dams)

I still can't believe Skip Bayless didn't win that tournament. Stuart Scott just brings out the worst in some people.

Yeah, that still stings. Bayless was Ivan Drago in Rocky IV in the rounds of that tournament leading up to the final. He didn't just beat Kirk Herbstreit, Chris Fowler, Larry Bowa and Jay Mariotti, he annihilated them.

And the comments?

Oh, the comments!

Anyway, thanks for putting that together, way back when, Mac. It remains one of the most memorable little moments in my internet history.

Best of luck, hope you kick cancer's ass.

[edit] On second thought, Mac's thread deserves better than a rant about Skippy Bayless. Snipped.
