HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

Great, so Betts is playing tonight, but Machado isn't. Shouldn't the Red Sox be spotting the O's, like, 4 or 5 runs?
   3. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: June 11, 2018 at 07:26 PM (#5689931)
It's very odd that Boston is 5 games played ahead of the Yankees, and is playing tonight while the Yankees are off.
   4. BDC Posted: June 11, 2018 at 07:38 PM (#5689935)
Tonight I’m in Grand Prairie, Texas to see the AirHogs play the Lincoln SaltDogs. Parking lot seemed crowded till I realized it was all players. 98° and would they think of domes in this league?

Pujols will try to steal 4 or 5 bases.

That will be my next flirt thang phrase, if I ever get to be solo again.
   7. BDC Posted: June 11, 2018 at 07:53 PM (#5689942)
The AirHogs don’t do a blistering box office. For showing up, I got a free ticket in the front row behind home plate. I have to be careful I don’t lean into the netting & get brained.
   8. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: June 11, 2018 at 07:55 PM (#5689943)
I have to ask though, please excuse my unknowingness, those 4 yellow-shirt dudes in Marlins' Park... are they like famous or something ?

Man, 58, scout, gets brained during AirHogs game. Name to be released later.

Is there some rule that they can't use spaces in minor league team names these days?

Unwritten rule, if you write that shiite, you get beaned !
   12. BDC Posted: June 11, 2018 at 08:06 PM (#5689948)
Half the AirHogs roster is from Beijing, so we start with the Chinese national anthem.

Half the AirHogs roster is from Beijing,
First thought on joining the team: "Where the #### am I?"

Second thought: "The #### is an AirHog??"
   14. BDC Posted: June 11, 2018 at 08:22 PM (#5689955)
Lu Zhenhong and Du Xiaolei go down in quick succession. Third batter is a guy called Correlle Prime who is as big as both of them put together. He pulls a HR down the line in left.
   15. cardsfanboy Posted: June 11, 2018 at 08:44 PM (#5689962)
Poncedeleon has made the major league roster, that is quite a story.
   16. cardsfanboy Posted: June 11, 2018 at 08:47 PM (#5689965)
I had to check it, Flaherty allowed a homerun, and it feels like the Cardinals don't allow a lot of homeruns....looking it up, they have the fewest homeruns allowed in baseball coming into todays game.. (Cubs have a slightly better rate as they have allowed 56 hrs in 62 games vs the Cardinals 55 in 63 games.)
   17. cardsfanboy Posted: June 11, 2018 at 08:55 PM (#5689969)
Cardinals signed their first round draft pick, a potential impact bat type of player. I was surprised to see him signing this early since he didn't seem like a "reach" pick.
   18. BDC Posted: June 11, 2018 at 09:01 PM (#5689972)
Dillon “Do Not Go Gently” Thomas batting for Grand Prairie.
   19. cardsfanboy Posted: June 11, 2018 at 09:13 PM (#5689977)
Jose Martinez, professional hitter™ with a two run homerun to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.

Edit: 5 homeruns in his last 6 games, I know that being hot isn't predictive, but it's absolutely a real thing.
   20. Andere Richtingen Posted: June 11, 2018 at 09:28 PM (#5689984)

Yeah, I was totally shocked when it was revealed that he's actually 56.

That was where Captain Kirk first met Mr. Spock.
   22. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: June 11, 2018 at 09:35 PM (#5689988)
I always mix up Poncedeleon, SpongebobSquarepants and that idiot from the Red Sucks, Sandy 'Oil Can't' BoyddeLeon.
   23. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: June 11, 2018 at 09:37 PM (#5689990)
And I thought those 2 out of 3 taken @Nats was a good OMEN for the Fish Games... and now the Giants suck like hell again.
Thanks, Nats !

And then Starlin Castro, might as well rub it in !
   24. AT-AT at bat@AT&T Posted: June 11, 2018 at 09:42 PM (#5689993)
And then Brian Anderson, might as well...whatever !

Jose Martinez, professional hitter™ with a three hit night..

(it's his 10th 3 hit game of the season)

Some ####### named Realputo or something homers. Giants down 7:5.
   27. cardsfanboy Posted: June 11, 2018 at 09:46 PM (#5689997)
Ozuna is starting to find his power as he homers to make it 4-1 Cardinals, he has 7 hrs now, his fourth since June 2nd, not the greatest power surge in baseball, but something nice to see from a guy struggling to start the season.

Brewers are getting lucky, also #### braun.

Brewers are probably going to win it all... I feel it while taking a piss.

There are 99 people in the stands here in the fifth inning, not counting ushers and the mascot. I counted every single one.

Still probably better than the Marlins.

Flaherty has completed 6 innings, 5 of them have been 1-2-3 innings, in the second it was out, homerun, single, out, single out... nice game so far for the kid.

they just swept a pair against Mets...

If the Cardinals get one more run, I'm pretty sure it means Daniel Poncedeleon will enter the game.

How have they fared against major league teams? :)

Do you really want to use that as a yardstick? I'm just saying.
   38. BDC Posted: June 11, 2018 at 10:12 PM (#5690023)
I’ve got a ticket to see the Orioles later this year - two days after the trade deadline, so I won’t even get to see Machado.
   39. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: June 11, 2018 at 10:13 PM (#5690025)
Mike Trout looked terrible in Minnesota. First at-bat in Seattle, and he homers. There must be kryptonite in the water up in Minnesota.
   40. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: June 11, 2018 at 10:19 PM (#5690032)
Givens dodges a bazooka by not walking home the winning run twice in a row. Now can the O's PLEASE score a run? Just one. Just one.
   41. Bote Man Posted: June 11, 2018 at 10:22 PM (#5690036)
The Orioles are so, so terrible.

Hey, they've held the mighty, mighty Red Sox scoreless through 11 innings (although we'll just look the other way during that top of the 11th).
   42. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: June 11, 2018 at 10:23 PM (#5690037)
And then Pujols homers. 2-0 Angels.

In my head, I was thinking that Pujols is now red hot, 11 RBI in his last dozen games, counting tonight. Now looking at his like for the past dozen games, it's a .311/.348/.522. I'll happily take it, but that's a far cry from what Albert Pujols used to look like red hot.
   43. Bote Man Posted: June 11, 2018 at 10:28 PM (#5690040)
Heath Hembree >>> Alan Embree
   44. Howie Menckel Posted: June 11, 2018 at 10:31 PM (#5690042)
Josh Hader facing Jason Heyward, which is like in-his-prime Joe Frazier boxing that Wizard of Oz munchkin - the one that just died.

so of course Heyward pulls and rips a bullet single to right to the game. w t f

Mildly surprised Nunez didn't just puke right on the plate the way that pitch hit him.

HOLY CRAP SOMEONE SCORED A RUN IN BALTIMORE!

Twice zobrist was toast on the bases and brewers d saved him.
   48. BDC Posted: June 11, 2018 at 10:40 PM (#5690048)
Indie minors moment: batter singles. Next guy leaves the on-deck circle - dropping his bat. He picks up the bat the batter just dropped, and uses that one.

Foul grounder hits the 1B coach in the nuts - I guess that could happen at any level.

Good Lord Baez! He goes 2-0 on 2 pitches well out of the strike zone, then swings and misses on balls 3, 4, and 5, all worse than either ball 1 or 2.
   52. Howie Menckel Posted: June 11, 2018 at 11:06 PM (#5690057)
2-2 Brewers-Cubs, 1st and 2nd 2 outs in the 8th.

MIL bizarrely brings on closer Knebel who:
- has not pitched in the last 4 days
- threw only 14 pitches in his last game
- has wildness as his lone weakness at his peak
- hasn't been off the DL that long

ball ball ball ball. walk. ball ball ball - wait, ump gives a charity strike vs Schwarber - ball. so 3-1 with the bags loaded. Schwarber swings into the deep shift and - barely - gets punched out at first base (he slides, because of course).

Knebel back out in the 9th. Baez up. so based on what we have just seen, what would a Little League player do? take some pitches. duh. ball ball.
so Knebel STILL has yet to throw a strike. but Baez, after taking 2 straight pitches for maybe the first time all season, is twitching. high heat. high heat. high heat. swing. swing. swing. and there's your strikeout.

can't anybody here play this game?

Misirlou gets the beverage but I like mine too

   62. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 11, 2018 at 11:47 PM (#5690083)
So let's say Zobrist's ball down the line had actually been just fair, but still called foul. He and the baserunners stop running with the call, but the play is reviewed (I think it's reviewable because it's past the 1B ump, right?). The foul call is overturned. Do the umps just use their discretion in placing Zobrist and the runners where they thought they probably would have ended up?
   63. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 11, 2018 at 11:47 PM (#5690084)
Fantastic inning for the Cubs here.

I can only surmise that the Brewers bullpen is completely empty since Albers is still out there.

Until just now.

The Brewers need counsel more than Counsell.

Meanwhile, Heyward is probably over 100 now.

#62:
Consistent with Official Baseball Rule 8.02(c) (formerly Rule 9.02(c)), if Replay Review results in a change to a call that had been made on the field, the Replay Official, to the extent feasible, shall exercise his discretion to place both Clubs in the same position they would have been in had the call on the field been correct. This shall include placing runners where he thinks those runners would have been at the conclusion of the reviewed play if the reviewed call had been correctly made in the first instance, disregarding interference or obstruction that may have occurred on the play, failures of runners to tag up based upon the initial call on the field, runners passing other runners, missing bases, etc.

Heyward now hitting .281.
   72. Andere Richtingen Posted: June 11, 2018 at 11:55 PM (#5690093)
I'd guess that if that had been overturned they would have called both runs in. Russell was probably at second and running when the ball landed.
   73. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 11, 2018 at 11:57 PM (#5690094)
Thanks, Brian. The purist in me thinks that maybe there should be some "Play it out!!" call by the umps on extremely close fair/foul plays, and then do the replay once the play is fully concluded, but of course it would be terrible from a pace of play standpoint to call a bases-clearing triple back.
   74. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 11, 2018 at 11:59 PM (#5690096)

And Florida wins on a walk off HR, when a deep fly which was not going to go out bounced off the RF glove over the fence.

Didn't see a conclusive angle but looked 50/50 whether it would have gone out. Would have been close.

Gators had a straight steal of home in that game, too.

The purist in me thinks that maybe there should be some "Play it out!!" call by the umps on extremely close fair/foul plays,

the NFL refs are going in that direction. on a possible fumble, just stand there, let the guy score - and then let the overlords sort it out. if they stop the play - well, same issue that you note.

it's weird for the fan in the stands, though - they celebrate a long TD even as the refs on the field are pretty sure it's not a TD. then the booth overturns.
   82. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: June 12, 2018 at 12:17 AM (#5690106)
The need to let it play out would be more pronounced in football, where who knows what would happen on the fumble recover. In baseball you have a pretty good idea of where the runners had a 90 percent chance of ending up, so probably better not to deal with called back plays.

It's one of the things that makes replay so awful. You are watching something happen and you can't enjoy the moment because you know it's going to get reviewed. 82 is right that the need to play it out is more important in football. Frankly I have yet to see a play in a baseball game where the confusion you reference came to pass. I'm sure it HAS happened but given the amount of baseball I watch I feel comfortable saying it's not a big concern. As it is we have fan interference plays and obstruction calls that require the same type of judgment calls.
