THT - A Special Revenge for Luis Tiant

Between the remote scents of the sea breeze and the countryside freshness coming from the oaks and wild flowers, Dad insisted to know what a no-hit, no-run game was about. I tried with all my efforts to find a situation related to Dad’s everyday routine to make the explanation easier. He pressed his cigarette against the ashtray and raised the radio’s volume. “After eight complete frames this game is still 3-0. Now Tiant stops by the Caracas team dugout and looks inside it and to the fans in the stands. He passes his right index finger past his neck. The Caracas team fans are sad and furious.”

The only "I'm a major leaguer" dream I ever had involved Tiant. I came to the plate in spring training or some such, and Tiant was on the mound. He winds up to the point where his back is to the plate, I hear the ball hit the catcher's glove, strike one. Happens two more times, but I remain in the box. The pitches come faster and faster from every conceivable angle. I finally drop the bat in surrender - and see my entire dugout sprawled on the ground, laughing at the hopeless rookie.

Through no achievement of my own I have had the good fortune to sit down with Luis on several occasions (among other things my father interviewed Luis for the SABR bio of Luis’ father). I cannot say enough what an incredibly kind and friendly guy Luis is. He is smart, funny and engaging. He has some amazing stories of his minor league days in the 60s in particular that express the racism and challenges those guys had to endure.

Great great guy.

#3, that's great to hear because it's one of those things where you hope a guy like Tiant is good guy. He was so much fun to watch as a player and to hear he's engaging and kind just completes a nice picture.

I like pitchers that have funky motions. Tiant, Cueto, Kershaw's pause, Aaron Cook's old school wind up, Marichal's reach for the ground, high leg kicks, etc.
