Tigers fans see sparks fly on foul tip, but catcher Alex Avila does not

Just when you think you’ve seen it all- this is pretty cool.

When Avila was asked about it after the game, he had no idea what media members were talking about. Avila said he never saw the sparks, which shot in several directions as a foul ball slammed into his mask…

It is unclear whether the ball hitting the mask or the ball forcing two parts of the mask to rub caused the sparks to fly.

This is the kind of thing that only happens if A.J. Pierzynski is involved.

REALLY?!

They think the leathery exterior of a baseball can generate sparks?!

Honey, in some of the places I've been to, you can't generate sparks without a leathery exterior.

The take away is, as always, being a catcher suuuuuucks.

Wow. That is amazing. I don't see how you don't get a nasty headache/concussion from that, even with a decent mask.

I suppose things would be easier if you could carry a piece of steel and a baseball in your wilderness survival kit -- if things got desperate, you'd always have something to hurl at an unreasonable beast.
