Tigers lose on walk-off balk

Among the first drills new Tigers manager Brad Ausmus worked on with his club in February was a rarely attempted pickoff move to third base.
...
Honestly, it felt like a disaster waiting to happen when Ausmus introduced the drill, and on Friday night a perfect example of just how disastrous it can be played out when a little bit of miscommunication led to a game-ending balk in Detroit’s 3-2 loss to the New York Yankees.

This reminds me of one of my favorite games of all times.

I find it interesting that Ausmus so publicly stated his plans to install a third-base pickoff move. It seems counterproductive, unless you have no intent to actually install a third-base pickoff move during the regular season, but wouldn't mind putting it in the back of your oppponents' minds in an effort to keep them a little closer to the bag.

If the latter was truly your intent, a walkoff balk in a Grapefruit League game wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen.

They call balks in spring training?

Why wouldn't they call balks in Spring training? Everybody needs the practice, umps too.

everybody wants spring training games to end. i would consider telling my pitcher to walk the first hitter in the bottom of the 9th of a tie game and then balk three times just to get on the road home earlier. especially in florida.

If you wanted to get home even earlier, you'd just have him hit the guy :)

How about a few pick-off throws behind a trail runner just to get into their heads too
