Tigers To Sign Joe Nathan

I guess this “explains” it…

The Tigers are in agreement with Joe Nathan on a two-year deal, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports (Twitter link).

The world would make sense if they also acquired Francisco Liriano and Boof Bonser the same day the Red Sox signed A.J. Pierogi.

I don't know what is going on here.

So ... they cleared Fister's salary to sign Nathan? Or ... no?

I haven't been this confused since the last episode of Lost.

The Tigers are acting like a team suddenly under a very strict payroll ceiling.

Or that has hired Ed Wade to be its GM.

Detroit is going to have a brand new look, that's for sure. It's a lot of turnover for a team that was inches from making the World Series.

this is what I kind of had in mind for the reds. never imagined the tigers would go the makeover route.

I like being surprised by baseball teams.

As a child of the 80's, I prefer Dr. Detroit. When is Broadway going to adapt that shit?

Nathan can lead the Save-a-Game Mission.

Shooty, it took almost 30 years of marriage, but last year at some point I realized that I had grown to love GaD by osmosis. My other two faves are The Music Man and Singin' in the Rain. Other than them, I'm not that much of a fan of the genre.

Luckily Mrs. Shooty isn't really a musical fan. The worst she subjects me to is John Denver, which is weird, but at least he doesn't cost me $200 bucks and two hours of my life coming up on the shuffle. Thanks for dying John!

(too soon, right?)

Not too soon for John Denver. He was one of the reasons my broke self finally sprung for a radio with FM.

While I don't care much for his music, I'll always be grateful for him politely punching the PMRC right in its stupid face. Tipper Gore and her gaggle of busybodies were fully prepared to brush off what a long-haired hippie like Zappa and a cross-dressing freak like Dee Snider had to say, but they expected meek little easy listening John Denver to be on their side, and he totally pulled the rug out from under them.

He's a big reason why you're allowed to buy and listen to the kinds of music that you DO like, and if nothing else, you should respect him and be grateful to him for that. He wouldn't have lost a single sale if the PMRC's proposals had gone through - he opposed them because it was the right thing to do.

What is this "buying" of music of which you speak?

Naw, I kid. Still don't want him coming up on the shuffle. Maybe Country Road because that's actually a good drinking and singing along to song.

John was pretty well established as a hippie himself... more of the flower child, too nice by half, love everyone hippie -- but he was a tree-hugging, gun hating, love your fellow man and give him things type hippie to anyone that cared to listen to him speak (rather than sing) long before that...
   20. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: December 03, 2013 at 04:36 PM (#4609845)
Even though Denver was a hippie, he was seen as respectable by the PMRC types. Zappa was the kind of guy where they'd have a long talk with their daughter if she brought him home for dinner.

(Of course in reality, Zappa wasn't really a hippie at all - he didn't buy into mind-expansion and he loved tweaking the noses of the mindless conformists on the far left way too much for that. I just called him that because that's how the PMRC would have seen him.)

I've heard loving covers of "Country Roads" in bars in both Germany and Thailand. Makes me like that song.

Do the Tigers get the 2013 Joe Nathan or the 2011 version? (Full disclosure: Nathan is from Circleville, NY, about a twenty-minute drive from my house. A good friend of mine went to high school with him.)

So the Tigers, in essence, traded Fister for Nathan, a LOOGY, a useful bench player, and a left-handed pitching prospect. This is a classic "trade from strength, shore up weaknesses" exchange, and I'm happy with it.

A good friend of mine used to sleep with him while he was playing for the Twins. So I'm sure she's devastated.

Hey, he'll now return to the Twin Cities three times each season. They can renew old acquaintances.

True. The interesting thing is that their version is a cover of a version Ray Charles did. You can tell because Toots does the same little exclamations that Ray does in his version.

The song is also one of the main plot points of "Whisper of the Heart", which is a Studio Ghibli film directed by Hayao Miyazaki's protege. It was the only film Yoshifumi Kondo directed before he died. It's a great film, in my opinion, though it might be a little old-fashioned.

I think that's going too far. The PMRC was going to stop us from getting the music we want the same way the War on Drugs has stopped us from getting the drugs we want. It may have caused something like Napster to arrive sooner. I don't see how it could have stopped the music.

I agree, it's a wonderful film.
