Tigers’ Todd Jones announces retirement

Rehoboth Beach…here I come!

Todd Jones, who represented the best and most challenged times in recent Tigers history, has decided to retire at age 40.

Jones made the announcement today in his weekly column for the Sporting News.

“So this is it,” Jones wrote. “If you’re a Tigers fan, I’ll never stress you out again. If you’re not a Tigers fan, you’ll never have me as your ace in the hole, convinced I’ll blow a lead against your team.”

He should have stuck with the fastball down the middle: "You won't have Todd Jones to kick around any more."

OK, he deservedly takes a lot of crap, but that's damn good.

He can now spend all of his time with his husband Clay Aiken and their new baby.

Todd Jones and Matt Millen on the same day? Inconceivable!

Now that I think of it, the two announcements came pretty close...

Agreed. He may be a homophobe, but damn if he doesn't have a sense of humor.

Indeed, further kudos to Jones for that line.

I'm really going to miss him.
He seems like he was one of the good, honest guys in the game and I really loved reading his stuff.

And I, for one, really enjoyed his columns for The Sporting News. It was a great window into being a big-leaguer.

This is rare. I'm getting a Repoz reference that very few other people here will.

I felt the same way, Dock. I never get his references and got this one right away.

Phew...I was a little worried no one would mention that in this thread.

For a long time I kept getting Todd Jones and Doug Jones mixed up. It probably started in 1993 when they both pitched for the Astros... then finally Doug Jones retired and I stopped mixing them up.... now, in a few years, I'll probably start mixing them up again...

Poor Jim Leyland. He won't have any more Todd Tums® moments he could turn into Endorsement Dollars. Back to Marlboro Country™ for him.

Right out of college, I lived in a basement apartment in DC. The couple who owned the house spent practically every weekend at their other place at Rehoboth.

I've been a proud resident of the First State for eleven years and I have yet to make a trip the beaches.

I'm told real Delawareans head to Dewey or Lewes before Rehoboth. All the out-of-staters crowd Rehoboth.

How do you live anywhere for 11 years and not go to the beach?

Many lifetime residents of Kansas are scratching their heads at this one...

Ha,
I obviously didn't mean going to the beach in Kansas.
Rather, how could you live anywhere even kind of near a beach and not go for 11 years

It's annoying. Not the beach so much as the ocean, the sand and the seagulls and things like that.

Beaches suck, as #20 said. I've lived a block from a beach in two separate locations for a combined 6 years and probably set foot on sand twice maybe.

Living a block from the beach, with a view of the ocean, kicks ass however.

I've lived all of my life within a few miles of large bodies of open water, and the last time I went to the beach I was about six. My Mum got me a toy bucket and shovel, and took me to the beach. Apparently (although I don't remember this), I threw a fit, and loudly proclaimed, "I don't want to go to the beach. I want to go to the ART MUSEUM!"

Haven't been to the beach since.

You guys need beaches with chicks in bikinis.

I am shaking my head at the idea that Todd Jones 'seemed like a good guy'.
