Tim Benz: Contend this year? Don’t buy what Pirates are selling | TribLIVE

“Rebuild implies that you’re looking five years out, and you’re going to punt the current season.

“We are not rebuilding,” Huntington said.

So “restock”, “replenish” and “refresh” are totally different from “rebuild.” Ah! Got it, Neal.

I look forward to “Nuance Night” at PNC Park. The first 15,000 fans through the gates get a thesaurus.

Huntington also admitted organizational “projection models” predict the team will be worse than the 75-win team of 2016. Then — in the same response — the GM tried to convince listeners that the team could still be the wild-card Twins or the 86-win Brewers of last year.

Right. So tell me again what were you saying about “hope that may or may not be real?”

Correcting the article, they won 75 games in 2017, 78 in 2016.

They're in an unusual situation. The collapse of the 2015 team was so sweeping that it's almost like they did a complete tear down, but got nothing to rebuild with. It seems to me that right now they're just trying to salvage some wreckage - Polanco, Marte, Cervelli, maybe someone like Moran - and trade them at opportune times before an actual rebuild can start.

I'm surprised that Polanco really never busted out. I always thought he was going to end up being the best of the 10s Pirate OFers... but he's going to be 26, he's got nearly 2000 MLB PAs, and it just hasn't happened.

Josh Bell looks like a keeper, though.

So, by keeper, you mean looks to be traded in 4 years for a AAA relief prospect ranked in the mid 30's and a single-A player who is some organization's 14th best prospect.

#2: Polanco was coming on in 2016, but injured his hamstring around July 4 and really hasn't been healthy since. He's missing a lot of development time.

The Pirates have a fundamental problem. Ownership wants to keep the same level of profitability every year, and still contend. As a small market team, you can't do this. You've got to be willing to push payroll to the break-even point when you've got a good core.

If you compare the Pirates and the Royals, they both became competitive in 2013 (94 wins for the Pirates, 86 wins for the Royals). The Pirates had a $66M payroll, and the Royals $81M. Over the next 4 years, the Royals ramped up payroll to $143M (2017). The Pirates peaked at $99M in 2016, and actually came down last year.
