Tim McCarver says MLB won’t let networks show Pete Rose video

Well this is petty and asinine.  Tim McCarver appeared on The Dan Patrick Show this morning after DP returned from a summer vacation and dropped a nugget about the paranoia that permeates throughout Major League Baseball.  The Fox analyst revealed MLB restricts them from showing video of all-time hit king Pete Rose, and the same goes for ESPN as well.

...Rose has been part of at least one of the classic All-Star Game moments, so pretending he doesn’t exist seems like a stretch for the iron claws of Uncle Bud.  Why now this pointless policy, though?  We’ve seen him at plenty of MLB games before, he’s finally admitted his crimes and come clean, heck he even had his own reality show.  And NOW MLB is going to try to wipe him from the history books?  Absurd.

Thanks to JH.

Well, he's come clean about the crimes that he copped to in order to sell books. Who the hell else knows what Rose was behind? I guess we'll have to wait until he needs another influx of cash.

I'm firmly anti-Rose and glad he's still banned and out of the Hall but this is too far. For much the same reason I think the "real HR king" crap is stupid this is similarly stupid. Rose did achieve those things and it is perfectly reasonable to include him in a video montage about the game (particularly that his ASG moment is one of the most famous ever).

I saw Pete just the other day on an MLB Network clip.

Also, FOX will not be allowed to show Bartolo Colon during the All-Star Game.

Agreed. This is actually the reason I think he should be in the HOF (although permanently banned from MLB). He did those things, he was a great player. Gambling on baseball doesn't take away that fact.

Well, he's not playing, so that's easy.

Has Pete Rose's movements before 9/11 ever been clearly established?

What about his whereabouts during the Lindberg baby kidnapping?

"Also, FOX will not be allowed to show Bartolo Colon during the All-Star Game."

"Well, he's not playing, so that's easy."

Good thing, too- I doubt the technology exists that could create a fuzzy blue dot large enough to block out Bartolo Colon from our TV screens...

Who here can claim to be surprised? If Bolshevik Bud could remove Rose's image from all footage and every baseball card he would, he's that sort of spiteful autocrat.

#5 Not exactly a new point, indeed more than a decade and a half ago the HOF had a Rose FAQ (What the heck, thanks to the magic of the wayback machine, here it is. And here is the HOF's "Official Statement Regarding Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson"

The HOF has never tried to pretend his many achievements never happened, they just won't give him a plaque as long as he's on MLB's ineligible list.
   12. salvomania Posted: July 15, 2013 at 03:40 PM (#4494984)
Exactly, #11: Rose is "in" the HoF. When you go through the WS exhibit, he's there, in the Big Red Machine tears, and elsewhere. His hits record is acknowledged in the HoF.

He just hasn't been personally enshrined as an inductee, which makes perfect sense.

But for MLB/ESPN to not acknowledge him in relevant moments is ridiculous.

I'm guessing this is inaccurate. I think that Tim McCarver probably doesn't know what FOX's agreement with MLB will and will not allow them to show, or even if there are any restrictions at all.

I'm thinking so too. This would preclude them from showing virtually any footage of the Big Red Machine, or even the 1975 World Series, and I'm sure I've seen that on ESPN and other networks.

The Church of Seligtology acknowledges that the apostate squirrel Pete Rose once existed, but that any image percepts of him are false implants.

I guess they'd just show Colon up to his ankles. Incredibly, there would be (sort of) precedent for this, per wiki:

The Challenge Cup replaced the (NHL) All-Star Game in 1979. Staged at Madison Square Garden, the Challenge Cup was a best-of three-series between the NHL All-Stars against the Soviet Union national squad. Games 1 and 3 were shown on the NHL Network, while Game 2 was carried, in bizarre fashion, on CBS. First, only the third period was aired on CBS (as part of CBS Sports Spectacular), which had a problem with the dasher board advertising that the NHL sold at Madison Square Garden. The network (after complaints from other CBS sponsors) refused to allow the ads to be shown; as a result, viewers were unable to view the far boards above the yellow kickplate, and could only see players' skates when the play moved to that side of the ice. (Games 1 and 3 were seen in their entirety on the NHL Network, which had no problem with the advertising.)

MLB has the Fosse hit on Youtube.

http://youtu.be/4Fj2B9z4Dbw

It is not like they are trying to eradicate all trace of Rose.

Yeah, but notice how Fosse gets bowled over by Rick Astley.

Well I think we already know that MLB considers YouTube to be squirrel technology. Had Bud ever denied being a scientologist?

Well, MLB seems to have erased the 2002 All-Star Game from its memory...

How can you guys whine and gripe when there are so many great players to enjoy, such as 2012 NL batting champion Buster Posey?

You didn't hear it from me, but let's just say Pete was visiting a young lady named Anna Warren in 1996 in Memphis....

I was watching the Home Run Derby tonight at a bar. On another TV they had ESPNNews on showing memorable All-Star moments or somesuch, including one Pete Rose mowing down Ray Fosse at the plate. So Pete Rose was this very day on ESPN.

Tim McCarver, oracle of truth.

The fact that McCarver said it should've been your first clue.
