Kevin Millar to go fourth as O’s cleanup man

Lineup construction…the alien Trembulous way.

“If I had to write out the lineup tomorrow, Millar would be the cleanup hitter to start the season,” Trembley said. “That doesn’t mean he’ll stay there, but to start the season, that’s what I’ll probably do. I think he sees a lot of pitches. I think he always comes up with one very good at-bat during the game. He’s a good two-strike hitter and he’s a good two-out RBI guy. I’m going to sandwich him between two left-handed hitters.”

...“The guy I want to protect is Adam Jones,” Trembley said. “I could see Jones hitting up in the order against left-handed pitching and maybe down further against right-handed pitching. I think Ramon might be able to protect Jones somewhat. I still think Ramon is going to have a big year.”

Millar hasn’t hit cleanup regularly since he was with the Florida Marlins in 1999. In 148 games there in his career, he has a .264 average with 15 homers and 88 RBIs. Orioles cleanup hitters last year had just 19 home runs, the second-lowest total in the league.

“It’s never handed to you ... in this game,” Millar said. “I always love competition. I love to battle and to have Dave Trembley behind me and to have confidence in me to say, ‘Listen, this is my guy,’ that’s it. Am I going to hit 40 home runs? No. But I’ll give you a tough at-bat every time, and I think that’s what we need to have as a group and as a team.”

Rotoworld:

Kevin Millar left Friday's game in the fifth inning after being hit in the left hand by a Russ Springer pitch.
It was bad enough that he'll probably be taken for X-rays.

Oh, to be an Orioles fan.

With that team in that division fewer than 100 losses would be a big achievment.

I thought teams signed Millar so they could afford to pay good players.

So my prediction of Baltimore being last in the AL East this year by a country mile is still looking good then.

Holy crap.

Relegation seems appropriate.

I thought Manny was batting clean-up for the Sox.

Wow. Camden Yards is going to good place to root for the other team this year, regardless of who that team is.

I'm a lifelong Orioles fan.

Am I allowed to disown them? At what point?

Interesting question I've never had to ponder. When I gave up on the Bruins it came in the context of losing interest in the NHL entirely. The situation with the Celtics was more complicated, but when the Celtics sucked and looked like they'd suck for the forseeable future, I never abandoned them per se but pay a lot less attention to the NBA.

Why now? They've sucked for a long time. At least they now seem to have a real plan to rebuild. You'd rather have them overpay some 34 year-old mediocrities so they'd win 76 games?

Markakis and Jones give you two really exciting young players to follow. I'd stick with them.

Oh, to be an Orioles fan.
Wait, you said that like it was a bad thing. I don't have anything against Millar personally, but I'm hoping that the entire Washed Up crowd that the Orioles refuse to cut -- Millar/Huff/Payton/Mora/Hernandez -- get hurt.

(Yes, that's just an emotional reaction; I realize it would backfire. If it happened, the Orioles would then blame their poor 2008 performance on their lack of veterans, and rush to sign Kenny Lofton or something.)

EDIT: unfortunately, the Sun reports that Millar is fine.

They do? How do they seem that? Right now, they're busy trying to find an excuse not to play any of their young pitchers, even though their "plan to rebuild" seems to revolve around acquiring lots of young pitchers.

I didn't say they were executing it properly, but its got to be better than the previous regime.

They seemed to have moved away a little from signing free agents for the sake of filling space. No Huff-type contracts this year.

Until The Peter's head is stuck on a pike outside the gate to the city of Baltimore, I'm not convinced that there is any "previous regime," unless you mean Eli Jacobs.

Put your love in cold storage until Angelos shuffles off of life's great stage. Until then, it's hopeless.

At least it's a nice ballpark, one that's a quick light rail ride from Answer Guy Manor. Hopefully there will be some young players worth following there this year. Since I go to a decent number of Orioles games that don't involve the Red Sox.
