Todd Helton cited on DUI charge, enters treatment center

Former All-Star first baseman Todd Helton has received a misdemeanor citation on a charge of driving under the influence after getting involved in a one-car accident.

Helton’s lawyer says the former Colorado Rockies star has entered a residential treatment program.

“He realizes there are parts of his behavior that need to change, and he is focused on doing just that,” Stephen Ross Johnson said in a statement.

According to a Knox County sheriff’s report, Helton’s car struck a telephone pole March 18 before 6 p.m. Officers said Helton indicated he had taken an Ambien at about 2 p.m. One officer saw a cup in Helton’s car that “had the odor of an alcoholic beverage.”

Officers said they were unable to conduct field sobriety tests or interview Helton in depth on the scene because he was being transported to a hospital for further evaluation. They said that “due to the totality of the circumstances, and due to the arrestee needing immediate medical treatment away from the scene,” Helton was given a misdemeanor citation “in lieu of custodial arrest.”

Do I remember correctly that he had a similar incident when he was still in Denver? Not sure

Last (& probably only) time I was prescribed Ambien, in maybe '98, it had about as much effect as an M&M might have. Apparently, though, that's not very common.

Yes, in 2013.

With a second DUI he’s now an honorary member of the St. Louis Cardinals.

I dated someone who told me her ex had taken it for about a week. She came home one evening to find him in the courtyard of their apartment complex, barely coherent, supposedly looking for their son (who was asleep inside).

Early Ambien was some serious ####. I long distance dated someone circa 2004 who was taking it and we'd have long, *very* weird phone conversations sometimes at night (I was SoCal, she was in NJ) that I would reference the next day (or so) that she would not only not remember but vehemently deny possibly saying or even being remotely capable of thinking of saying.

I believe the current version is more tempered to be time released, but that early stuff hit a lot of people like a hammer ... and produced some seriously strange things.
