Tom Powers: Twins remove ‘pitch to contact’ from official vocabulary

The phrase “pitch to contact” has been deleted from the Twins lexicon. It is gone forever.

Like Mikhail Gorbachev’s birthmark in official Soviet Union portraits, it has been expunged. All traces have been removed and no one is allowed to speak of it. As far as anyone is concerned, the phrase, like the birthmark, has dissipated into thin air.

“I’m never saying it again,” Twins pitching coach Rick Anderson said.

“pitching to contact.”  We’ve always been at war with Balls in Play.

Part of the problem with "pitch to contact" and "trust your defense" is the Twins infield defense has been terrible lately. The corner OF has been bad as well. They could get away with a rotation full of 89MPH fastballs when they had great defenders around the diamond.

I am removing the Minnesota Twins from my official vocabulary. Informally, though, I may still refer to them as the Twinkies

Don't tell Craig Finn.

The next step is to get the prospects like Alex Meyer and Trevor May into the major league rotation so we're not tempted to refer to the rotation as "5 crappy pitch-to-contact guys"

Right, in the near future, the Twins will be removing "Pitch to Contact" from their vocabulary, but not from their pitching staff. While the theory is good, the practice means a lot more to me.

I think they finally realized that it was more than injuries that ruined Francisco Liriano.

Somewhere, Brad Radke cries out and falls silent.

First rule of a pitch to contact rotation: nobody talks about pitch to contact.
