Tommy Lasorda talks food, baseball and motivation, as only Mr. Dodger can

Leapin’ lampredotto’s! I thought they did away with outside chest protectors!

ON PUBLIC SPEAKING AND CURSING:

But you know, when I was asked to do a book recently, the author wanted to include all the profanity. I didn’t want that. “But that’s how you speak,” he said. “I don’t give a (bleep), I don’t want no profanity in the book.” I want my granddaughter to read the book. I would hope it would be in libraries. No profanity. If you don’t want it my way, we don’t do it.

But ... I’ve been married 63 years. I’ve never used one word of profanity in front my wife, or my daughter, or my granddaughter ... or anybody else’s wife.

My God, look at the words people use today. They use profanity like it’s nothing. Christ almighty. When I was growing up, I never heard people swear the way they do today.

Hey, I know, when I’m in the clubhouse or on the field, I’m bad. I know that. One time Billy Buckner (with the Chicago Cubs) beat us on a Friday night with a double off Tommy John. He beat us Saturday with a homer off Mike Garman. Sunday, I hold a team meeting. I got really (bleeping) mad. “I want him (bleeping) drilled when he comes up. ... I went on and on. Finally, Don Sutton jumps up with a counter and says, “You just used the F-word 144 times and this meeting isn’t even over.”

I admit it, I’m bad on the field. But never when I speak to a group. Never. Not even a men’s club. You never know who’s in the crowd—a priest or preacher or rabbi. Just don’t do it.

What's my opinion of Kingman's performance? What the #### do you think is my opinion of it? I think it was ####### horseshit. Put that in I don't ####### ... Opinion of his performance? Jesus Christ he beat us with three ####### home runs. What the #### do you mean what is my opinion of his performance? How can you ask me a question like that? What is my opinion of his p - of his p-p-performance? Jesus Christ he hit three home runs. Jesus Christ. I'm ####### pissed off to lose the ####### game, and you ask me my opinion of his performance. Jesus Christ. I mean that's a tough question to ask me, isn't it? What is my opinion of his performance?

Jay Johnstone's first book had a story of he (and I think Jerry Reuss) trying to get Steve Garvey to swear (as a then future Senator, Garvey never swore)... Finally, after a lot of incessant needling, Garvey unloaded with a stream of F bombs, MF bombs, etc. The story was told verbatim -- leading to something like a half-page of pure profanity.

During his swan song season with the Dodgers, Lasorda was giving Johnstone the business because his book was too raunchy to be sold at the Dodger stadium souvenir stand unlike Lasorda's own... Amused by this - given Lasorda's well known penchant for profanity - Johnstone left the same page number blank in Lasorda's honor in his second book.

IIRC - didn't Lasorda wear a mic in a late 70s WS and introduce the world his colorful lexicon? Good thing rabbis, priests, wives, daughters, and granddaughters didn't watch the World Series in the 70s!

Did Sherlock Lasorda ever solve the mystery of that son of a bitch who writes under that Daily News, that fucking guy they call the fucking Nose?

I do not think it would be pleasant to watch Tommy Lasorda eat soup. That is all.

I remember something like an Old Timer's Game or similar baseball convocation about 12-15 years ago that featured Joe Garagiola and some other poor soul sitting in chairs against the backstop commenting on the festivities unfolding before them and the TV audience. Joe G. had a hand-held mic that fed the TV signal and the P.A. speakers in the stadium. Suffice it to say that his baseball dugout lexicon came out in full force that day, much to my surprise. No beeping, no panic from the producer to cut the transmission short. Awe-inspiring live television!

A few weeks ago I mistyped a url & ended up a MLB.com's 404 page and was greeted with this (which is one of a random set that you'll get if you hit any error page on there, try it!), which is now what I envision when I hear about Lasorda: http://mlb.mlb.com/images/404/lasorda_phanatic_640.gif

Thanks for the tip, zempf -- that is the best 404 page ever.

Thanks Zempf! I just saw the Holliday crotch shot and a Yankee getting beaned by an errant between-innings throw. Good to see a sense of humor over at mlb.com.

Edit: Now I see a Chone Figgins pop-up f-up. As a Ms fan, that just ain't funny. Screw mlb.com. Damn them to Hell. Okay, perhaps a bit of an overreaction.

The mlb 404 images are in the page source if you want to be sure you've seen them all:
