Tomo Ohka reportedly has a minor league deal with the Blue Jays

Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports that the Blue Jays have reached a verbal agreement on a minor league contract with Tomo Ohka, who has reinvented himself as a knuckleballer since he last appeared in the majors in 2009. The expectation is that he’ll begin the year with Double-A New Hampshire.

The battle to become the last Expo in the majors has a surprise new contender.

Whoa, isn't he like 45 now? (Checks TFA: He's 37.)

I am totally rooting for this. But it seems unlikely to work out.

Of course, because it's baseball, this is what makes it so terribly interesting because it just might.

When you have a catcher just for knuckleballs, you might as well double his work load. Given that their other catchers can't hit either.

I've always liked Ohka.

I know he's not really any good at this point, but there was a half-decade or so when you'd watch him pitch and see there was absolutely no reason he should be getting people out, but he kept putting up good-to-very good seasons. Plus, knuckleball! Hooray knuckleball!

If it works out (or even if it doesn't-- for the, you know, drama) this could be a good story for a sequel to the Knuckleball! movie from last year. You got RA Dickey right there, too.

I'm not bothered by this. At best, he pitches well enough to deserve time in the majors. At worst, he absolutely bombs, but gives the Jays some rotation filler whose arm they don't care about when every other starting pitcher gets hurt again.

Didn't one of the Nats once ask him "Hey skip, you ever play ball?"

“Look at me! I’m Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!”

What I expect to happen: we don't hear his name in a transaction again until it includes the word 'release'.

"And I'm Esteban Yan of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays!"
