Tony La Russa will return as manager of St. Louis Cardinals

Tony La Russa will return as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Saturday night, citing unnamed sources.

La Russa told the Post-Dispatch he had not discussed a contract with team chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. But he expects to have a decision soon.

“I’m coming to an understanding of what I’m doing and intend to get it settled one way or the other shortly,” La Russa, whose current two-year deal expires Oct. 31, told the Post-Dispatch.

La Russa, who during the offseason lives in Alamo, Calif., east of Oakland, was scheduled to arrive in St. Louis for a Bruce Springsteen concert Sunday night.

Just once I’d like to read about a MLB type going to a Shirrelle Limes and the Lemons gig or something.

I assume Joe Maddon is like a Raveonettes fan or something.

I've never heard of any "MLB type" going to see Elvis Costello. Perhaps they think he's still "new wave" or something, as if he hadn't done anything new since "Pump It Up" (just about the only Costello song you ever hear at a ballpark)

Jim Walewander liked the Dead Milkmen. Since there wasn't all that much else to say about him, that seemed to be mentioned whenever his name came up.

Lenny Dinardo is a big Pixies fan. He had the PA folks play "Debaser" as he came out to the mound.

I bet Mike Piazza has at least heard of Belle & Sebastian.

Weird, the Post-Dispatch article, the basis for this ESPN article, is much more ambiguous about La Russa's status. I guess somebody at ESPN is familiar with Joe Strauss's work.

this ESPN article is pretty ambigiguous also. The first line says he will return, but after that it says TLR hasn't talked about a contract and that he needs to make up his decision soon.. I'm not really sure that the decision has been made(although if it's from inside sources it's possible that TLR called the front office to say that they really should start negotiating terms of his contract when he is in town or something like that I guess)

Elvis Costello played the Major League Baseball All-Star Charity Concert in St. Louis this year.

I know that William Van Landingham was a huge Yo La Tengo fan. He mentioned it in an interview, after a rare victory when queried about his postgame activities:

"I'll go to my apartment in North Beach, order a pizza and beer, and listen to Yo La Tengo". I don't think that was the answer Ted Robinson was looking for.

that would make sense, McGwire has been somewhat an unofficial off season hitting coach for a few players (most notably Schumaker and Holliday)

CNN is carrying that rumor as well now.

It's official, apparently. I just submitted an article.

LaRussa said he had played passive aggressive sufficiently long and would transition to his standard fussbudget persona in time for the regular season.
