Toronto Blue Jays’ Brett Lawrie on DL with third oblique strain in two years

Brett Lawrie is back on the disabled list, this time with a left oblique strain that could force him to miss roughly a month of action with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Lawrie’s latest injury comes at a critical time for the Jays, who are battling for a playoff spot with three of their key offensive players on the disabled list.

The club announced Thursday that Lawrie was back on the DL, just two days after returning to the lineup after missing 36 games with a broken right index finger. It was not immediately known how he suffered the oblique strain, which affects a large muscle that covers the rib cage.

This is the third time in two years that Lawrie has suffered an oblique strain. He landed on the DL in spring training of 2013 (March 22) with a left oblique strain and returned to action April 16. In 2012 he missed a month with a right oblique strain.

I'd assume it was when he rounded first on a single, awkwardly missed the bag and looked like he ruptured every muscle in his body.

Is there a running waiver clearing thread?

Rios apparently cleared, does he make any sense for the Jays? Including next year's buyout he's apparently owed $4.5 mil. I could see him as an option to essentially do what Reimold is doing now, except the ability to play outfield.

Remember when Brett Lawrie was going to the Hall of Fame? Those were good times.

Is Rios still on the same contract he was on when the Blue Jays let him go on waivers? That would've been funny if the same team waived him and then claimed him a few years later.

Yep, still on that contract. Has a $13.5 M option for next year which is probably not worth picking up but isn't unreasonable anymore.

Wait that contract isnt over? Seemed like it was ages ago that the white sox claimed him.

Vernon Wells is still collecting money from HIS Toronto contract (via the Halos and Yanks, now) but that Rios deal was signed the next year, I think. So....one year left.

What's Adam Lind's timetable? Daddy's got keeper league issues.

Eric Karabell may have to drop him into the 4th round next year.

He didn't play a rehab game recently due to back tightness, but the team reportedly expects him back sometime next week.

I think Eric Hinske is available.

This is very disappointing. Lawrie is a good player but he simply can't stay in the lineup.
