   201. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: July 31, 2018 at 08:42 PM (#5718771)
i shrugged when they passed on re-signing albert ... because i knew in my heart they were making a business decision. but it still bothered me a little.
You all good with it now?

On Archer, it's not just 3/$27 ... the last two years are team options so if he blows up, they can walk away even from most of that. On quality/projection, it's mainly about whether you are or are not a believer in FIP/peripherals. The career FIP is 3.48 and he basically delivers that every year. He does consistently have a higher ERA than his FIP so that could be a real thing (or bad defense) but even that still puts you around a 105 ERA+. Anyway, the Ks have been pretty stable, the BBs have been stable, the HR rate has been stable ... the BABIP is up this year. Given that a single year of Lance Lynn cost $12 M when the end of spring training was approaching and Alex Cobb somehow still got 4/$57, Archer is a bargain at that price and there's no long-term commitment if the Pirates don't want one.

The trickier question is ... Gerrit Cole. They could have had him all of this year for $7 M and then all of next year for probably $11 M (or so it looked at the time of the trade), then given him a QO. They appear to have just given up more talent for 3+ years of Archer as they got for 2 years of Cole ... which might be about right or it might not.

seems odd for a team that is supposed to be rebuilding

Why can't a rebuilding team trade for major league players? Not every team needs to be contending or strip mining their roster.

It's odd in that they had multiple other years where it seems like they should have been more aggressive trying to add to a good team. And they traded away talent this off-season. But they seem better than most expected after those deals.

Agreed, the Nats did it with Span if I remember correctly. (or Werth...someone like that..)

Brandon Kintzler Caught Leaking

Should have traded him to the Marlins, so he could sleep with the fish.

Don't scare me like that ... you had me thinking there were photos of him taking a piss on home plate or something.

“Moustakas at shortstop would be unfathomably bad. Like, so bad it isn’t even worth considering.”

It’s totally worth considering from an academic standpoint. Like, would playing a guy obviously out of position result in worse RFs than Derek Jeter?

Brewers GM and manager both indicate that Schoop is gonna play some shortstop for the Brewers.

1B: Aguilar
2B: Shaw
SS: Schoop
3B: Moustakas

Well. It’s a good thing infield defense doesn’t matter.

You seem really angry. It's just a sports team man.Entertainment. Enjoy the experiment.

That's extraordinary.

That's extraordinary.

In this 2016 game, the A's fielded this infield:

1B: Billy Butler
2B: Chris Coghlan
SS: Marcus Semien
3B: Yonder Alonso

EDIT: In researching this tidbit, I learned that Butler's nickname is "Country Breakfast."

212--The Brewers do a lot of rotating of guys part because of injury part because CC I think looks for matchups or maybe he thinks everyone should be like him as a player. Only 4 Brewers have more than 600 defensive innings and compare that to like the Cubs who have 10 guys.
   215. Davo and his Moose Tacos Posted: August 01, 2018 at 11:57 AM (#5719044)
211–You missed my tone: I actually love this move! For years my hobbyhorse has been that teams should be wore willing to punt on infield defense, just because with the rising strikeout rates and sophisticated defensive shifts, it really doesn’t matter that much.

Like, if their options are to bench Travis Shaw or play him at 2B, they should play him all day long. His bat is too good to punt offense and just stick Eric Sogard there.

So yeah. I’m excited for this. (I was super excited in spring when there was talk of playing Ryan Braun at second. ONE TIME!)

Yeah but that was just one emergency start, not their ideal lineup. And I'm not sure it's any worse than the BrewCrew four.

heh, of course, that goes with out saying.

but at the time it wasn't quite established that he was going to go off a cliff. no one could have predicted the severity of his decline.

Ooh I got a competitor. Tampa Bay Rays, 9-23-04

1B: Tino Martinez
2B: Jorge Cantu
SS: Melvin Upton
3B: Aubrey Huff
