Ken Gurnick @kengurnick
Alex Verdugo not in OKC lineup tonight and Yadier Alvarez not listed as Fri. starter for Tulsa. Both LAD prospects rumored trade pieces.

I'm not sure if I should interpret this to mean a trade is imminent, or if this is just something contending teams always do with their top prospects just before the deadline.

That would be a good start for getting Sonny Gray. Much better than the Yankees seem to want to give up.

Scipio Africanus to whoever is facing Anibal Sanchez.

The Royals have traded Luke "My Dad manages the Red Sox" Farrell to the Dodgers, for cash considerations.

Jeremy Hellickson is skipping his start tonight for the Phils. Tough break, as the Phils have gone up 8-0 on Julio Teheran in the 5th.

MLBTradeRumors has the Orioles acquiring Hellickson, though they don't say for whom.

And the Mets getting AJ Ramos from the Marlins-- MLBTR doesn't say, but during the game just now they said two A prospects going to Miami.

Edit: That's two A-ball prospects, not grade A.
Edit 2: Randy Gonzalez and Ricardo Cespedes (no relation, I assume, since if there was they wouldn't stop talking about it and it hasn't been mentioned)

From the Marlins beat reporter:

The Brewers, Rockies, and Royals are among a small group of teams interested in Marlins starter Dan Straily. The Yankees are also interested in Straily. The Cubs have been talking to the Marlins about AJ Ellis, as @JoeFrisaro first noted.

Melky Cabrera and cash to the Royals for 2 garbage minor league starting pitchers.

Not really sure where Melk fits in, I can't imagine KC benching Alex Gordon even with his sub-.300 slugging average.

Too bad Scipio Spinks is retired.

The suddenly awful Jonathan Lucroy to the Rockies.

So weird for them to be buyers since they usually stink. He will fit in with all their other catchers who also aren't hitting.

Makes sense though. As much as they've rebuilt their staff with young starters, the current top 3 of their bullpen will all be FA after the season (Holland, McGee, and now Neshek). And you never know how many of those pitchers will stay healthy.

Done deal:

Addison Reed to BOSTON for minor league pitchers Gerson Bautista, Jamie Callahan & Stephen Nogosek.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/07/red-sox-nearing-deal-for-addison-reed.html

He will fit in with all their other catchers who also aren't hitting.

Tony Wolters, the nominal starter, got off to a fast start, peaking at .316/.416/.408 on May 26. Since then he's hit .206/.301/.230.

Tom Murphy looked like the real deal, with very impressive power, and had hit .266/.341/.608 in 79 major league at bats coming into this season. Then he broke his arm in spring training, came off the DL in June, went 1 for 20 with the Rockies, and has been unimpressive at Albuquerque ever since. Don't know what's going on with him.

Eh, I'm not horrified. 3 of Boston's top 30. It's not like they were going to pry loose JBJ or something...

Most boring trade deadline ever?

Three runaway divisions can't be helping.
   24. formerly dp Posted: July 31, 2017 at 12:58 PM (#5503379)
The return on Reed doesn't look too special, but these are the types of deals they need to make this year, esp after years of giving up similar prospects at the deadline themselves.

I'm curious how the return for Reed stacks up with the cost for Ramos. Essentially, between the two moves, they've gotten a little worse at the major league level heading into 2018.

Now the suspense turns to seeing if they can get a Dilson Herrera type return for Bruce...
   25. Jose is an Absurd Doubles Machine Posted: July 31, 2017 at 01:21 PM (#5503410)
Cross-posting from the thread about the Reed trade. My Sox fan notes on the return;

...I think it's a good get for a two month rental like Reed. Callahan (this year probably) and Nogosek (next year) are both likely to reach MLB soon and both have a shot at being middle relievers. They won't be sexy but they could be useful pieces for the Mets.

Bautista is the guy that could make this deal look bad though he probably won't. He can touch triple digits but if Kevin Costner ever said to him "hit the bull" he'd probably miss it. 100MPH is 100MPH though so if I was the Mets he'd have been a guy I'd want, see if I can help him harness it.

According to the folks at SoxProspects.com Bautista and Callahan are Rule 5 eligible this winter.

Story seems to be that Yankees send Fowler, Kaprelian, and Mateo. Fowler and Kaprelian are both done for the year, IIRC.

The Orioles announced that they’ve acquired Double-A right-hander Yefry Ramirez from the Yankees in exchange for international bonus pool money. Ramirez’s departure opens a move on the Yankees’ 40-man roster.
   29. Jose is an Absurd Doubles Machine Posted: July 31, 2017 at 03:06 PM (#5503521)
That looks like a terrible trade by Beane.

1.5M in international money is pretty valuable

Yep, given that everyone's goal should be to drain as much talent from the Yankees as possible in these deals, I don't like this at all for the A's.
   33. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: July 31, 2017 at 03:44 PM (#5503571)
Watson to Dodgers.

David Hernandez to Arizona.

   35. Infinite Yost (Voxter) Posted: July 31, 2017 at 03:51 PM (#5503578)
Wow, that seems like a pretty dogshit deal for Gray.

EDIT: ie, I feel like the A's just should have kept him if that was all they were going to get.
   36. JJ1986 Posted: July 31, 2017 at 04:05 PM (#5503586)
Tony Cingrani also to the Dodgers.
   37. Bourbon Samurai, what price fettucine? Posted: July 31, 2017 at 04:14 PM (#5503594)
Nats get Brandon Kintzler. They needed another reliever, but a guy whose value depends on groundballs is maybe not the best idea when your second baseman is daniel murphy
   38. Jeff Frances the Mute Posted: July 31, 2017 at 04:15 PM (#5503595)
Yu Darvish also to the Dodgers.
   39. You Know Nothing JT Snow (YR) Posted: July 31, 2017 at 04:15 PM (#5503596)
Mr. Cashman clearly lives in the real world, where Sonny Gray doesn't get you Torres or Clint Frazier. Not sure what some of you rubes were thinking but I urge you to breathe deeply the pungent aroma of the Reality Pipe now that the market has spoken.

Re Darvish: Passan is reporting that the Rangers are getting Willie Calhoun, A.J. Alexy and Brendon Davis. I've never heard of the last two before.

EDIT: Calhoun was #4 on BA's mid-season Dodgers top-10 prospects; the other two guys weren't ranked.
   44. rconn23 Posted: July 31, 2017 at 04:43 PM (#5503617)
Of all the names that didn't get traded today Alonso is the one that shocks me the most. Should have sold high on him, but the 1B market wasn't robust.

Saw A's source on Twitter saying Beane kept wanting to add him to the Yankees deal but Cashman was not interested.

The Rangers' return for Darvish is pretty impressive, Calhoun for a rental is a nice add for a team out of contention.

B.Davis is a sleeper - one of those guys who can potentially be solid at lots of things. (a poor man's isaac paredes, in some ways)
Long ways away, though.

I can not figure out the Tim Beckham to Baltimore trade. Neither team's actions make sense.
