Trailer for Willie Mays Aikens: “Safe at Home”

Aikens has overcome a lengthy jail sentence to make it back as a Major League coach, for the Royals. Hasn’t he suffered enough?

I wasn't a Royals fan, but I liked watching him play in the 80s. I hope he has his life back together.

Hopefully not a fielding coach. "If there is somebody worse than Aikens, he must be playing first base with a machete." -- Bill James.

Likewise, I hope he's now on the straight and narrow.

I loved the back of his 1981 Topps card.

Named Willie Mays Aikens by the doctor that delivered him. Who also happened to have a baseball bat in the delivery room (if the cartoon is to be taken literally)

I support his current quest for sobriety.

However, I do not forgive him for past usage during the 1982-1983 seasons when he was a teammate, which led to baseball accustations against my character from guilt by association. The questions even followed me to my post-business school job interviews. Only Willie Wilson ever realized the collateral damage that he caused and apologized to me thorugh a common friend.

Too bad David Halberstam is not around to write a different type of teammates book.

That stinks. I know rumors surrounded George Brett for years, whether it was because of guilt-by-association, or not.

That speaks volumes about Willie. He seems totally different than his playing days. As a player he seemed angry and self-centered, like he always had a chip on his shoulder. In retirement, he seems to be about the most gracious and giving person you could ask for. Its quite a transformation and he should be applauded for it. From what I have read, he's undergone quite a bit financially since his playing days.

Well, and incarcertationally -- without intending any comment towards Aikens, drug laws, or anything else -- he did do 15 years in prison... that tends to distress one's finances.

Sorry, I meant Willie Wilson, not Willie Aikens.
