This is a really good article, RTFA material.

Agree, great article. I love stuff like this that gives us a glimpse behind the curtain. And I love Jack McKeon trade stories.

I forgot Chris Speier was so good early in his career. I only saw him as a utility infielder in the 80s bouncing around the NL.

Really cool how comfortable the Expos made him upon the trade. Wonder if clubs still do that.

And can you imagine any owner shagging flyballs anymore?

Good story.

Unfortunately, yes. Mark Lerner, one of the Nats' owners, seems to do this a few times a season. Once in uniform, IIRC. It's really not as charming and whimsical as you might hope.

That's a very nice piece of writing. I wish Johnny D had written a Brosnan/Bouton-style diary book of one of his seasons.

And this trade to Montreal was for a player to be named later - Randy Bass - who found little success in San Diego but had a fantastic six year run with the Hanshin Tigers in Japan. He is now a farmer and Democratic state senator in Oklahoma.

Democratic state senator in Oklahoma

Thanks for the info. Didn't know Oklahoma had Democratic state senators.

That was my reaction. That's got to be the loneliest job in the world.
