Trevor Bauer knows his math

What’s going through your head? Are you replaying an at-bat from a previous inning or is it something totally different?

“Nah, it’s stuff not related to baseball. I’ll have a conversation I had with a friend from the night before playing through my mind. Or I’ll be thinking about some science article that I read the night before. I don’t know, ‘Flying cars are pretty awesome.’”

“But when you actually look at it and think about the statistics behind it, it makes a lot of sense. Hitters are trained to hit the ball hard on the ground. Fly balls are bad. You don’t want to hit the ball in the air. Hit the ball on the ground. Pitchers are taught to get them to hit the ball on the ground. Something’s got to give.”

h/t to Brad Evans for the most interesting link of the Yahoo Fantasy Baseball season

"People freak out about the walks. I classify walks in two different ways. You have a good walk and you have a bad walk."

RTFA. This kid is awesome.

And maybe an h/t to Piecoro for doing the actual interview ... Bauer for saying the actual interesting things.

If I were the D-backs, I would not have effed with his headphones routine. Don't mess with success.

Consider me impressed, he's exceptionally well-spoken and wise for any 21-year old. If his performance ends up matching his philosophy, I think Jim Palmer will be an apt comp.

Wow! I'm impressed too. He sounds like he'll be fun to watch. When is he expected to come up?

That's not an accident. From what I can tell, Piecoro is the best baseball beat writer working today.

Not really.

Alex Speier still brings the heat every day.

I think it's a very good period for baseball beat writers. One might even be tempted to call it a golden age of baseball beat writing.

4: he's at least up there - big fan of piecoro

I've been seeing many observers rate Hultzen a better prospect. I still like Bauer a lot, but I'm concerned about how many he walks, no matter how he justifies it. That's not gonna play in the show.

Also, on an unrelated prospect note, Nick Castellanos is hitting .413!
