True Blue LA: Chips Off the Old Block

Per the Dodgers, the Elias Sports Bureau has confirmed that Friday’s starting lineup was the first in major league history to have five sons of major leaguers, as Ivan De Jesus, Dee Gordon, Tony Gwynn Jr., Jerry Hairston Jr., and Scott Van Slyke all started. It was also the first ever lineup to feature an infield with four sons of big leaguers.

And the team has the best record in baseball. Might scouts use this information to argue that bloodlines are what count in evaluating a player? And are the Dodgers scouting Trey Griffey?

Don't we need some paternity tests before recognizing this "record".

I demand to see their Hawaiian birth records. Long form.

(Pretty cool, though, except for the part where it makes me feel really old. I can distinctly remember each of these fathers playing in the big leagues. How long until I see the first grandson of a guy I saw play in the bigs?)

How old is Boone's kids?

They generally don't come cheap. I think Shawon Dunston's kid signed for 1 million dollars and he was an 11th rounder I believe.

I wonder if being unable to lay off the breaking ball low and away is genetic, or if Shawon had to teach him that skill.

There was an article about his kid (I think it came out recently) that actually talked about how he has to get used to breaking balls in fastball counts and I smiled a little when I read that. Like father like son.

It's not mentioned here, but reserve infielder Justin Sellers is also the son of a former major-leaguer, the little-remembered Jeff Sellers (Red Sox pitcher, 1985-88). He didn't play in Friday's game, but he's on the Dodgers' roster.

I guess Garrett Garciaparra already has offers.

He's on the DL right now.

I think Preston Mattingly is still in the LA system as well (at least I think he was as of last year).

IDJ II: 124 OPS+
SVS: 56
TG II: 85
JH II: 166
DG: 49

On Friday, they were 6 for 19 with 4 doubles, 2 BB and 3 runs -- not a bad day.

As to genetics, if you can't get a Bonds, Boone or Bell, grab a Hairston. Jerry is the brother of Scott, son of Jerry, nephew of John and grandson of Sam. That's two sets of Hairston brothers to make the majors although John was just 1 for 4 in his career. Sam was just 2 for 5 although he has a handful of Negro League PA and I would guess missed the war years.

Pete Rose Jr. is probably still kicking around somewhere, right? I see he was in the Atlantic League as recently as 2009 (at age 39), after playing in the Northern League and Mexico.

The Dodgers just called up Shawn Tolleson, but he is not related to Wayne or Steve.

Jr.'s a minor league manager in the White Sox organization now. He played 21 seasons in the minor leagues. 21. That's unbelievable.

Sr. really messed that guy up.

This will pale in comparison to the all-Cromartie defensive backfield some NFL team will feature some day. Knowing Antonio, all four kids will have birthdays within 9 months of each other.

It is, almost literally. Is that some kind of modern-day record?

I suppose if I were halfway skilled and didn't need to work any other kind of job, I might try to do the same thing.

Backfield? He can fill out a whole defense with a backup.
