TSN: Justice: Yanks sure could use their other closer in Sabathia derby

It’s about time Jack Aker got some credit!

Maybe Joe Torre could have closed the deal with CC Sabathia. After all, he has a great reputation with players.

Perhaps he could have convinced Sabathia that pitching for the Yankees would be a wonderful experience. If Torre could change Mike Mussina’s mind about the Yankees, he might be able to change Sabathia’s.

...Now, as the Yankees nervously await an answer from Sabathia, as they debate whether to throw still more money at him, it’s one of those times where Hank Steinbrenner’s decision to show Torre the door looks more foolish than ever.

The Yankees have millions to throw at free agents this winter, but so far no player has jumped at the money. There’s a sense among some agents that a lot of players don’t want to play for the Yankees.

That gossip could be a bargaining tool, or it could reflect how much less appealing the Yankees have become in the post-Torre era.

Well, I think we've now established that Richard Justice can write as foolishly about other teams as he can about the Astros. Well played, Mr. Justice.

Every time the fans boo arod, i cringe and worry that other superstar players are going to be turned off. Of course, you'd never hear the media talk about that, b/c they are the ones leading the arod bashing.

But even ARod himself wasn't scared off--he went right back to NY without even pursuing any other options.

As for Torre, say what you want about him, but it seems like quite a few players took short(ish) money from the Yankees and said that they did so because they wanted to play for Torre.

I think you might be overstating the number of players who took short(ish) money for the Yankees because of Torre, but in any case, that's not the point Justice is trying to make here. He's claiming guys are going to be turning down big money from the Yankees because Torre isn't there. That I don't buy.

remember when Posada and Rivera both said they weren't sure they wanted to re-sign with the Yankees without Torre there? Yeah ...

Serious question - was anyone else really going to offer 10/275?

Nope, but if Tex really gets 8/160 or something, that A-Rod contract may look like a bargain!

Probably not, but they were never really given the chance. It seemed that the minute ARod became a FA he was focused on getting back on the Yankees.

I read it as saying the players might have been locked up already instead of in limbo.

The real sweetener that the Yanks threw in was the chance to meet Madonna.
